Above and top photo by Simon Kennedy<\/p>\n<p>Held annually by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rias.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland<\/a> (RIAS), the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award was launched in 2002 and named in memory of Scottish architect Andy Doolan.<\/p>\n<p>According to the award jury, this year&#8217;s shortlisted projects celebrate the ways the architecture industry works alongside other built environment disciplines, such as urban design and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249207 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rias-andrew-doolan-best-building-scotland-award-2025_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Fairburn Tower restoration in Scotland\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Also shortlisted is Simpson and Brown&#8217;s restoration of Fairburn Tower. Photo by Landmark<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year&#8217;s rigorous selection process has produced a diverse shortlist of intelligent schemes that not only demonstrate architectural excellence but also engage directly with the shifting political and behavioural circumstances that shape our public life,&#8221; said jury chair Mary Duggan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They reveal how architecture can reinforce, respond to, and even anticipate these changes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/11\/22\/burrell-collection-andrew-doolan-best-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/john-mcaslan-partners-burrell-collection-rias_dezeen_2364_col_5-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Burrell Collection by John McAslan + Partners\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Burrell Collection museum in Glasgow named Scotland&#8217;s best new building\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh-based studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpsonandbrown.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simpson and Brown<\/a>&#8216;s restoration of Fairburn Tower in the Highlands is one of the shortlisted projects this year.<\/p>\n<p>Having fallen into disrepair, the studio transformed the remote 16th-century tower into a holiday rental for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/landmark-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Landmark Trust<\/a> charity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249212 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rias-andrew-doolan-best-building-scotland-award-2025_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1772\"  \/>Stallan Brand and LDA Design&#8217;s regeneration of Union Terrace Gardens is in contention to win the award. Photo by Andrew Lee<\/p>\n<p>Also shortlisted is the Union Terrace Gardens public realm regeneration project in Aberdeen, where Glasgow-based architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/stallanbrand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stallan Brand<\/a> and London-based landscape architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lda-design.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LDA Design<\/a> added three pavilion-like buildings containing a cafe, restaurant and wine bar.<\/p>\n<p>The studios also enhanced the park&#8217;s green spaces and restored its\u00a0statues, railings, arcade arches and underground Victorian toilets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249211 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rias-andrew-doolan-best-building-scotland-award-2025_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x638.jpg\" alt=\"Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1771\"  \/>Three newly added buildings in the park contain a cafe, restaurant and wine bar. Photo by Andrew Lee<\/p>\n<p>The third shortlisted project is Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge in Aberdeenshire by local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/moxon-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moxon Architects<\/a>. The studio was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/09\/19\/2024-rias-andrew-doolan-best-building-scotland-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortlisted in last year&#8217;s awards<\/a> for its renovation of 19th-century farm buildings into a guesthouse and private artist&#8217;s studio.<\/p>\n<p>Made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/weathering-steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weathering steel<\/a> and recycled, locally sourced granite, Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge was built to draw vehicle traffic away from a Category A-listed bridge further upstream.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249208 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rias-andrew-doolan-best-building-scotland-award-2025_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Nucleus Building at the University of Edinburgh\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The Nucleus Building was designed by Sheppard Robson for the University of Edinburgh. Photo by Keth Hunter<\/p>\n<p>The final project on the shortlist is the Nucleus Building at the University of Edinburgh, which was designed by British architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sheppard-robson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheppard Robson<\/a> as an educational hub for staff and students to teach, study and socialise.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Duggan, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marydugganarchitects.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Duggan Architects<\/a>, this year&#8217;s jury consisted of design consultant Gordon Murray and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/architects-journal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Architects&#8217; Journal<\/a> news editor Richard Waite.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249209 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rias-andrew-doolan-best-building-scotland-award-2025_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1221.jpg\" alt=\"Nucleus Building at the University of Edinburgh\" width=\"1649\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The university building was created as a hub for students and staff.
