{"id":442544,"date":"2025-09-22T05:21:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T05:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/442544\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T05:21:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T05:21:17","slug":"mayor-renews-push-for-rent-control-powers-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/442544\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor renews push for rent control powers in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-180070 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sadiq-Khan-mayor-of-London.jpg\" alt=\"Sadiq Khan mayor of London\" width=\"730\" height=\"455\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>London Mayor Sadiq Khan is renewing his efforts to secure rent control powers in the Capital.<\/p>\n<p>He told members of the London Assembly it was top of his list of devolved powers, and it was essential to improve conditions for renters.<\/p>\n<p>Key pledge<\/p>\n<p>Rent controls were one of Khan\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thenegotiator.co.uk\/news\/regulation-law-news\/london-mayor-makes-rent-controls-key-election-pledge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key election pledges<\/a><\/strong> before he was re-elected as Mayor in May.<\/p>\n<p>And he has stated many times that he wanted to introduce rent caps in London.<\/p>\n<p>A devolution white paper currently under consideration could lead to new rent controls in different parts of the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote-solid\">\n<p>Why can\u2019t we have what Edinburgh has?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Mayor admitted that ministers were not keen on the idea, and an amendment to the Renters\u2019 Rights Bill introducing rent caps was unlikely to be agreed.<\/p>\n<p>He asked, \u201cWhy can\u2019t we have what Edinburgh has?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His argument that the Scottish Government had introduced rent freezes, so why couldn\u2019t the same thing be done in the Capital, appears to be falling on deaf ears in the Government.<\/p>\n<p>Undaunted<\/p>\n<p>But undaunted Khan is ploughing on, perhaps hoping that a change in leadership of the Labour Party, with fellow Mayor Andy Burnham taking over, might mean a shift in position.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham, who is the Mayor of Manchester, is rumoured to be considering a challenge to Sir Keir Starmer as the Prime Minister struggles to asset his authority after just a year in power.<\/p>\n<p>A Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesman told the Daily Telegraph: \u201cThe Government will not allow rent controls in London or anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will empower tenants to challenge excessive rent hikes through our Renters\u2019 Rights Bill to give people housing security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thenegotiator.co.uk\/?s=Rent+controls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More on rent controls<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"London Mayor Sadiq Khan is renewing his efforts to secure rent control powers in the Capital.
