This is a higher percentage than those who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/politics\/eu_referendum\/results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted for the UK to leave the European Union in 2016<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Note: the chart is correct at 54%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Opinium (@OpiniumResearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpiniumResearch\/status\/1969480910333420002?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 20, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Unpopularity contest \u2013 with Starmer winning it<\/p>\n<p>Opinium note the situation has significantly deteriorated for Labour since they took power. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opinium.com\/resource-center\/opinium-voting-intention-17th-september-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reform\u2019s fortunes have grown<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Reform is currently on 31% (+1 on a fortnight ago) of the vote, followed by Labour 22% (-1), the Conservatives 17% (-1), and the Liberal Democrats 12% (n\/c). When looking at voting intention among those who voted Labour in the General Election in 2024, only 67% would pick Labour again, whilst 12% would now choose Reform, 6% Liberal Democrats, 6% the Green Party, and 2% would vote for the Conservatives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the majority of 2024 Labour voters want Starmer to stay in position, a sizeable percentage would prefer he resign:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\ud83d\udea8Latest Opinium <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ObserverUK?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@ObserverUK<\/a> polling\ud83d\udea8<\/p>\n<p>A third (34%) of people who voted for Keir Starmer\u2019s Labour only last year now want the prime minister to resign and be replaced with someone else. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/l1tfAQdScy\">pic.twitter.com\/l1tfAQdScy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Opinium (@OpiniumResearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpiniumResearch\/status\/1969486720883163584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 20, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Opinium added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Keir Starmer\u2019s approval rating has suffered a further slump, dropping 2 points in the last fortnight to net -42%. This is joint with Rishi Sunak\u2019s lowest score post-\u201cD-Daygate\u201d (net -42%) and almost near Boris Johnson\u2019s net -44% after his government collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more damningly, 2024 Labour voters only just give him a net positive rating, with 39% disapproving of the job he is doing while 41% approve.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, just under a quarter (23%) still think Starmer would make the best Prime Minister \u2013 giving him a 9-point lead over Kemi Badenoch (13%). However, a majority (52%) now say neither leader would make the best Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a 17 September Canary article, we looked at YouGov polling on approval, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/trending\/2025\/09\/17\/labour-approval-rating-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and found that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>the Starmer government\u2019s approval is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better than the crisis points before Theresa May and Liz Truss resigned.<\/li>\n<li>Equal to Rishi Sunak\u2019s at the point when he lost the general election.<\/li>\n<li>Significantly worse than the lowest moments for David Cameron and Boris Johnson.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1710692\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-17-at-14.13.14.png\" alt=\"Graph showing government approval over time since 2011\" width=\"1175\" height=\"664\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Challengers<\/p>\n<p>Reporting on the potential longevity of Starmer\u2019s premiership, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opinium.com\/resource-center\/opinium-voting-intention-17th-september-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opinium reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Just over half (54%) of UK adults now think Starmer should resign, including a third (34%) of 2024 Labour voters. By way of comparison, this is higher than the 45% who called for Sunak to resign in April 2024.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about who would be the best replacement, Andy Burnham is the top pick (13%), followed by Wes Streeting (5%).
