Monomoy Girl, one of the top racemares of the past decade, will be bred to elite sire Gun Runner for the 2026 breeding season.<\/p>\n
Owner Spendthrift Farm announced the plan Monday via its social media accounts.<\/p>\n
The mating would produce Monomoy Girl’s third foal, after producing a pair by Spendthrift’s cornerstone sire Into Mischief. The first, a colt named Provenance, is a 2-year-old of 2025, finished third on debut in a Del Mar maiden special weight on Aug. 23 for Spendthrift Farm and trainer Bob Baffert. He was followed by a filly, who is now a yearling.<\/p>\n
Monomoy Girl, a 10-year-old Tapizar mare, won 14 of 17 starts and earned $4,776,818. She earned the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old female in 2018, and she picked up another Eclipse as champion older female in 2020. Her seven Grade 1 wins include two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, and the Kentucky Oaks.<\/p>\n
Spendthrift purchased Monomoy Girl for $9.5 million at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.<\/p>\n
Gun Runner stands at Three Chimneys Farm, where he has established himself as one of North America’s top sires on the racetrack and in the breeding shed.<\/p>\n
The 12-year-old son of Candy Ride currently ranks third on the North American general sire list by earnings, with $13,868,131, with runners of note in 2025 including Grade 1 winners Brant, Locked, and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
Gun Runner was the leading sire of this year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale by average sale price, at $877,125. He had 12 horses change hands for $1 million or more, led by the $3.3-million sale-topper.<\/p>\n
During his own on-track career, Gun Runner 12 of 19 starts and earned $15,988,500, securing Horse of the Year honors in 2017 and later a spot in the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
