{"id":444285,"date":"2025-09-22T22:46:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T22:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/444285\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T22:46:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T22:46:16","slug":"france-recognizes-palestinian-statehood-at-un-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/444285\/","title":{"rendered":"France recognizes Palestinian statehood at UN meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNITED NATIONS (AP) \u2014 As the Gaza war rages on, France recognized Palestinian statehood on Monday at the start of a high-profile meeting at the United Nations aimed at galvanizing support for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/unga-israel-palestinians-statehood-gaza-war-11edddc147d24c73d13316330ebae1d4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a two-state solution<\/a> to the Mideast conflict. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/britain-palestine-recognition-israel-starmer-f667dca304a308b4b3ccf8100ef5051e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More nations are<\/a> expected to follow, in defiance of Israel and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s announcement in the U.N. General Assembly hall received loud applause from the more than 140 leaders in attendance. The Palestinian delegation, including its U.N. ambassador, Riyad Mansour, could be seen standing and applauding as the declaration was made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue to the historic commitment of my country to the Middle East, to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, this is why I declare that today, France recognizes the state of Palestine,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n<p>Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco also announced or confirmed their recognition of a Palestinian state, a day after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/britain-palestine-recognition-israel-starmer-f667dca304a308b4b3ccf8100ef5051e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal<\/a> did. Germany, Italy and Japan took part in the conference but did not recognize such a state.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting and expanded recognition of Palestinian statehood are expected to have little if any actual impact on the ground, where Israel is waging <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/israel-hamas-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another major offensive in the Gaza Strip<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-west-bank-e1-settlements-8a713939ee6f6552381246dacc8a1301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.N. secretary-general Antonio Guterres said \u201cstatehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward.\u201d That appeared to push back against the Israeli government, which says recognizing statehood rewards Hamas after its Oct. 7 attack that set off the war in Gaza two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Abbas says \u2018enough violence and war\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, forced to address the meeting by video <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/un-general-assembly-palestinians-abbas-israel-aa45c5e27dad591b33d04cf24377ebd9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after the U.S. revoked his visa<\/a>, again condemned the \u201ckilling and detention of civilians, including Hamas\u2019 actions on Oct. 7, 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the Palestinian Authority is establishing a new social welfare system after abolishing payments to the families of Palestinians killed or imprisoned by Israel, a decision taken months ago that had been a longstanding demand from Israel and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the Israeli people, he said \u201cenough violence and war,\u201d and he wished Jews around the world a happy new year on the occasion of Rosh Hashana.<\/p>\n<p>Abbas\u2019 internationally recognized Palestinian Authority is led by rivals of Hamas and administers parts of the West Bank. It recognizes Israel, cooperates with it on security matters, and is committed to a two-state solution. Israel accuses the Palestinian Authority of incitement to militancy and has ruled out any role for it in postwar Gaza. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-protest-public-opinion-c81e9684f14d5d00b23b13a3d337389b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Many Palestinians<\/a> view the leadership in the West Bank as corrupt and increasingly autocratic.<\/p>\n<p>International community widely backs a Palestinian state<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-statehood-recognition-diplomacy-7e0b290f0faeef85476f518538d96fbf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Around three-fourths of the 193-member United Nations<\/a> recognizes Palestine, but major Western nations had until recently declined to, saying one could only come about through negotiations with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians have welcomed the moves toward recognition, hoping they might someday lead to independence. \u201cThis is a beginning, or a glimmer of hope, for the Palestinian people,\u201d Fawzi Nour al-Deen said Sunday as he held a bag on his head, joining thousands of people fleeing south from Gaza City. \u201cWe are a people who deserve to have a state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem \u2014 territories seized by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war \u2014 is widely seen internationally as the only way to resolve the conflict, which began <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/22fac35cfbc84b3e941a144440541a24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than a century before<\/a> Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7 attack.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli government is opposed to statehood<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government opposed Palestinian statehood even before the war and now says such a move would reward Hamas, the militant group that still controls parts of Gaza. He has hinted Israel might take unilateral steps in response, including <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-09-03-2025-15a7856a92d4663527598e46dd91b789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annexing parts of the West Bank<\/a>, which would put a viable Palestinian state even further out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric brushed off such threats, saying efforts to bring about a two-state solution should continue regardless of Israel\u2019s actions. \u201cI think we have to be determined in achieving the goal that we want to achieve, and we cannot be distracted by threats and intimidation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu is under pressure from his far-right coalition to move ahead with annexation, but the United Arab Emirates \u2014 the driving force behind the 2020 Abraham Accords, in which the UAE and three other Arab states forged ties with Israel \u2014 has called it a \u201cred line,\u201d without saying how it could affect the two countries\u2019 now close ties.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu said he would decide on Israel\u2019s response to the Palestinian statehood push after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House next week, their fourth meeting since Trump returned to office. The Israeli leader is set to address world leaders at the U.N. on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration is also opposed to growing recognition of a Palestinian state and blames it for the derailment of ceasefire talks with Hamas. Trump\u2019s envoy, Steve Witkoff, walked away from the talks in July, and earlier this month <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-qatar-strike-what-to-know-cdef05446fdc7767cf6656baedb4c154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an Israeli strike targeted Hamas negotiators in Qatar<\/a>, a key mediator.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinians are politically fragmented<\/p>\n<p>France and Saudi Arabia have advanced a phased plan in which a reformed Palestinian Authority would eventually govern the West Bank and Gaza with international assistance. It was overwhelmingly supported by the General Assembly on Sept. 12 by a vote of 142-10. Twelve members abstained.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas, which won the last Palestinian national elections in 2006, has at times <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hamas-khalil-alhayya-qatar-ceasefire-1967-borders-4912532b11a9cec29464eab234045438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hinted it might accept a state on the 1967 lines<\/a> but remains formally committed to a Palestinian state in all of the territory between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, including Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Israelis and Palestinians held U.S.-brokered peace talks beginning in the early 1990s, but those efforts repeatedly stalled because of outbreaks of violence and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/a-look-at-how-settlements-have-grown-in-the-west-bank-over-the-years-0000019079d8d0f6a3da79dcbd0a0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel\u2019s expansion of settlements<\/a> aimed at cementing its control over the West Bank.
