Picture: Callum Mackay<\/p>\n<p>After a prolific run to the final, which saw them score 23 goals in their four games against Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Glasgow and Fife, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ross-shirejournal.co.uk\/sport\/school-pupils-crowned-national-cup-winners-by-forfeit-379615\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scheduled opponents Paisley were not able to fulfil the fixture.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That meant the North of Scotland were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ross-shirejournal.co.uk\/sport\/north-of-scotland-back-with-a-bang-after-ending-47-year-wa-379716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crowned cup winners for the first time in 47 years by default, but that did not dampen spirits in the north.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Players from schools as far afield as Stornoway, Fort William, Thurso and Grantown as well as Inverness and Dingwall came together one last time to be presented with the trophy and receive their winners\u2019 medals.<\/p>\n<p>Team captain Craig Lawrie, an S6 pupil at Dingwall Academy who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverness-courier.co.uk\/sport\/dingwall-teenager-follows-in-father-s-footsteps-as-he-signs-359324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already made his debut for Highland League outfit Clachnacuddin<\/a>, was in his second year playing for the north select, and says the team were more physical this year to make it through the national competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year the squad was older and more mature, and we were more physical,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were able to compete better with teams, and when we got a lead we were able to hold on to it. Last year we would get in front, then end up losing 4-2 because we weren\u2019t developed as fully and as physical as other teams.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 5332 3555\" alt=\"The North of Scotland schoolboys team have won the National Cup for the first time since 1978. Picture: Callum Mackay<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the last moment of my school footballing career. It\u2019s probably the best moment, getting this trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great feeling. It was disappointing that we didn\u2019t get to play the final, but it was really good to get there and bring it home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hasn\u2019t fully sunk in yet, but it might in a couple of weeks once I sit down and think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strathspey-herald.co.uk\/sport\/grantown-grammar-school-pupil-proud-to-be-called-up-for-scot-369435\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grantown Grammar School S5 pupil Torran Lambie, who plays in Ross County\u2019s youth academy and has represented Scotland at schoolboy level<\/a>, memorably scored a hat-trick \u2013 including a last-minute winning header \u2013 to see off Glasgow 5-4 in the quarter finals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the first round this has been a strong squad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believed from the start that we could do it, so it\u2019s nice to get to the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was obviously disappointing not being able to play the final when we\u2019ve got this far, but we\u2019ll take the win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can look back and realise we made some history, and that will be a good feeling for the rest of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully we have an equally as strong squad next year to help us try and win it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both teenagers also paid tribute to their coaches, Kevin McKie and Angus Dey, for their influence on the squad over the last academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrie commented: \u201cMr McKie has played a big part in my footballing career at school.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 5875 3917\" alt=\"Dingwall Academy pupil and North of Scotland team captain Craig Lawrie with the National Cup. Picture: Callum Mackay<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has given me chances in the north squad, and even in our school team we have gone pretty far in most cups we have played in. He\u2019s a really good coach in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lambie added: \u201cAs a unit we\u2019ve had that belief from the start, but it\u2019s thanks to the coaches, Mr McKie and Mr Dey, that our belief was brought to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to thank everyone involved for their support, my family and Mr Dey for putting me forward for the trials.
