{"id":445370,"date":"2025-09-23T08:43:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T08:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/445370\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T08:43:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T08:43:11","slug":"singapore-inflation-softer-than-expected-hits-fresh-four-year-lows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/445370\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore inflation softer than expected, hits fresh four-year lows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The view from the rooftop pool of the Marina Bay Sands resort hotel, which overlooks the financial district skyline of Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Wallace | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s core inflation posted its softest rise since February 2021, coming in at 0.3% for August as services costs eased.<\/p>\n<p>The figure \u2014 which strips out prices of private transport and accommodation \u2014 was lower than the 0.5% expected by economists polled by Reuters, and lower than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/singapore-july-inflation-eases-to-0point6percent-below-forecast-lowest-since-jan-2021.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">0.5%<\/a> seen in the month before.<\/p>\n<p>Headline inflation in Singapore came in at 0.5%, down from the 0.6% in July.<\/p>\n<p>The Monetary Authority of Singapore said that services inflation fell due to cheaper holiday expenses, airfares and inpatient services.<\/p>\n<p>The largest driver of inflation in August came from private transport, as car prices rose while petrol prices dropped at a slower pace.<\/p>\n<p>The MAS also kept its full-year inflation forecast for 2025 at between 0.5% and 1.5% for 2025, compared to 2.8% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the ongoing trade conflicts could be inflationary for some economies, their impact on Singapore&#8217;s import prices is likely to be offset by the disinflationary drags exerted by weaker global demand,&#8221; the MAS wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s easing inflation comes even as the city-state braces for weaker growth in the second half of the year, with the boost from front-loaded exports expected to fade.<\/p>\n<p>The country had recorded better-than-expected GDP growth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/14\/singapore-second-quarter-q2-gdp-growth-2025-tariff-trade-mti-mas-singstat-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the second quarter of 2025<\/a>, expanding 4.3% and accelerating from 4.1% in the first three months.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s Ministry of Trade and Industry now expects full-year growth of between 1.5%-2.5%, down from 4.4% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The latest GDP forecasts from the Ministry of Trade and Industry expect full-year GDP to be between 1.5% and 2.5%, compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/14\/singapores-gdp-growth-fastest-since-2021.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 figure of 4.4%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier projections had put the range for this year&#8217;s GDP growth to be between 0% and 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Gilbert, market analyst at Israel-based investment firm eToro said in a note that inflation is no longer the worry it once was for policymakers, and the latest numbers reinforce the case for the MAS to loosen its monetary policy in October.<\/p>\n<p>The MAS eased its monetary policy in January and April, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/30\/singapore-holds-monetary-policy-flags-slowdown-in-second-half-of-the-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held in July.<\/a> Unlike most central banks, it manages monetary policy by guiding the Singapore dollar within an undisclosed band against a basket of trading-partner currencies, rather than adjusting interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>Gilbert added that this is even more important, with the boost from front-loaded exports fading. &#8220;Recent export data, including an abrupt fall in non-oil domestic exports, suggest the payback from front-loading is already underway, adding to downside risks [for growth]&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s non-oil domestic exports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enterprisesg.gov.sg\/resources\/media-centre\/media-releases\/2025\/september\/mr03425_singapore-external-trade-august-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plunged 11.3% year-on-year in August<\/a>, a sharp reversal from the 1% rise expected from a Reuters poll of economists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The view from the rooftop pool of the Marina Bay Sands resort hotel, which overlooks the financial district&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":445371,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3090],"tags":[15193,51,3085,1700,476,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-445370","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-asia-economy","9":"tag-business","10":"tag-business-news","11":"tag-economy","12":"tag-inflation","13":"tag-uk","14":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115252730521132360","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/445370","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=445370"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/445370\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/445371"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=445370"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=445370"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=445370"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
