The Met Office has predicted a “fine day” in Liverpool as autumn officially began. The autumn equinox fell on Monday, September 22 at 7.20pm, marking the first official day of astronomical autumn in the northern hemisphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The weather<\/a> in Merseyside<\/a>, today, Tuesday, September 23, will be sunny, turning partly cloudy by the afternoon. Temperatures will reach highs of 17C and lows of 10C. According to the Met Office’s North West forecast, there will also be lighter winds.<\/p>\n

It will stay dry through the evening and overnight with mostly clear skies, allowing some mist and fog to reform in places. It is set to be another chilly night with a patchy rural grass frost. Minimum temperatures will be 4C.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Earth’s axis is tilted either toward or away from the sun throughout the year, meaning its warmth and light falls unequally on the northern and southern hemispheres \u2013 causing the seasons.<\/p>\n

After the autumn equinox, the night will be longer than the day \u2013 a hallmark of autumn and winter in the UK \u2013 until the winter solstice, which marks the shortest day of the year, on December 21, 2025.<\/p>\n

The solstice marks the time the days and nights are at their most unequal, which is effectively the opposite of an equinox.<\/p>\n

This happens when the Earth is at its most extreme tilt towards or away from the sun.<\/p>\n
