{"id":445490,"date":"2025-09-23T09:48:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T09:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/445490\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T09:48:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T09:48:18","slug":"joao-fonseca-shares-how-he-feels-about-not-being-picked-to-face-carlos-alcaraz-at-the-laver-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/445490\/","title":{"rendered":"Joao Fonseca shares how he feels about not being picked to face Carlos Alcaraz at the Laver Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Joao Fonseca enjoyed a strong Laver Cup debut, comfortably emerging victorious in his only match at the tournament. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In what marked Team World\u2019s sole win on the first day of the tournament, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/what-flavio-cobolli-was-overheard-saying-about-roger-federer-in-his-match-with-joao-fonseca-at-the-laver-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fonseca defeated Flavio Cobolli<\/a> 6-4, 6-3 to clinch a point for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/andre-agassi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andre Agassi<\/a>\u2018s side.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old was the only player for the champions not to play multiple matches at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/Laver-Cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laver Cup<\/a>, despite fans\u2019 excitement about the potential of a clash between him and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the Brazilian was not selected by Agassi to face the Spaniard, with the American opting for Francisco Cerundolo instead, a decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/joao-fonseca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fonseca<\/a> explained after Team World\u2019s triumph.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2236350690-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Joao Fonseca celebrates during his win over Flavio Cobolli at the 2025 Laver Cup\" class=\"wp-image-131225\" \/>Photo by Ezra Shaw\/Getty Images for Laver CupJoao Fonseca states the reason he was not picked more than once<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.br\/artigo\/_\/id\/15711271\/por-que-joao-fonseca-nao-jogou-final-laver-cup-faz-lobby-torneio-brasil-proximos-passos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN<\/a>, the young star said: \u201cI knew that with my Friday game, if anyone messed up, I\u2019d be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Saturday, everyone played incredible tennis. So, I wasn\u2019t sad or anything about not being selected on Sunday. I was even asked to play doubles, but I\u2019m not an expert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Team World completed a sweep on day two of the Laver Cup, winning all four of their ties to claim a maximum of eight points. <\/p>\n<p>Fonseca continued: \u201cWe had a team discussion, and we thought they (Cerundolo) were better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, anyway, it\u2019s part of the team, it\u2019s part of the team spirit. I was there on the bench, giving my all, giving 100%, wanting to win. So, it\u2019s part of it. Maybe next time I\u2019ll be playing Saturday, Sunday.
