James Gunn’s Superman has proved to be a streaming<\/a> hit worldwide despite not being available in the UK – here’s everything you need to know about the success for the superhero film and when it’s likely to come to these shores.<\/p>\n

The film<\/a>, a reboot of the DC Universe<\/a>, sees David Corenswet take on the role of the iconic hero, who has to balance his life as a journalist while also thwarting a plot from the sinister Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).<\/p>\n

After being released in cinemas in July, where it grossed over $615 million, Superman<\/a> was made available on Max last week (19 September), and it has proved to be an immediate success after becoming the most-watched film on the streamer.<\/p>\n

Max, however, isn’t yet operational in the UK, with the service expected to launch in early 2026. HBO currently has an agreement with Sky where Warner Bros films, including those in the DC universe, typically come to Sky Cinema and NOW eight months after their theatrical release.<\/p>\n

That would mean Superman wouldn’t be made available for streaming until roughly March 2026, though there is the possibility that the superhero film could be used as the flagship title for Max’s launch (whenever that will be).<\/p>\n

Until then, audiences in the UK will have to either rent or buy Gunn’s film, which is currently priced at \u00a315.99 and \u00a319.99 respectively on Amazon<\/a>. There are three editions – Standard, High or Ultra High-Definition – ready to go, with the price the same for each one.<\/p>\n

In addition to being a modest success at the box office, the film<\/a> struck a chord with critics, with Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> currently reporting an impressive approval rating of 83% from 487 reviews. <\/p>\n

“Superman is a triumph, both as its own standalone [film] and as a franchise-starter,” we wrote in our review<\/a>. “There will likely still be some fans longing for the Snyderverse to rise again, but everybody else will savour this fresh take on the iconic hero.”<\/p>\n

Following the film’s release, writer-director Gunn spoke about his approach to post-credits scenes<\/a>, with the filmmaker explaining that his style has evolved since his time on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series. <\/p>\n

“The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face\u2026 At times when you’re using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you’re screwing yourself over,” he said, adding that he was fitting a “weird square peg into a round hole”.<\/p>\n
