A road hit by sudden flooding due to a burst mains pipe<\/a> could be closed for a number of weeks, it has been confirmed.<\/p>\n

The residential road in Trafford<\/a> turned into a deluge on Monday (September 22) after the bust pipe sent a tide of water onto surrounding roads.<\/p>\n

United Utilities confirmed that the leak had occurred on Flixton Road in Urmston<\/a> at around 1.30pm, with local residents forced to use plungers and brooks to clear grates and keep water away from their homes.<\/p>\n

Videos circulating on social media showed a torrent of water pouring out of the ground on Flixton Road, which then flowed up surrounding residential roads.<\/p>\n

Greater Manchester Police<\/a> quickly closed off several nearby roads, including Irlam Road, to prevent cars from attempting to traverse the road, which was in places thigh-deep in flood water.<\/p>\n

United Utilities has now confirmed that the burst has been repaired, but that the residential road could be closed for a number of weeks for significant repairs to take place.<\/p>\n

Nearby Mile Road was also partially closed but is due to reopen on Wednesday (September 24).<\/p>\n

A United Utilities spokesperson said: \u201cWe are pleased to say that the burst on Flixton Road has been repaired, and our customers should see their water supply return to normal. We are still working to repair a smaller leak on Cheshire Road, Partington and customers may be experiencing low water pressure as a result.<\/p>\n

“We will provide further updates on our website when they are available. To keep the public and our staff safe while we reinstate the carriageway, road closures will remain in place on both Mile Road with traffic down to one lane until tomorrow (24 September), and where the original burst is situated on Flixton Road.<\/p>\n

“The latter is likely to be in place for a couple of weeks while our teams work quickly and safely to repair the void and reinstate the road.<\/p>\n
