but nothing that clearly pointed to appendicitis.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next two days, her symptoms worsened, and doctors from the US decided to remove the appendix as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p>Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, tube-like organ attached to the large intestine.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain that requires surgery, affecting about one in 20 people, mostly between the ages of 10 and 30.<\/p>\n<p>If left untreated, it can lead to a ruptured appendix, which can cause a life-threatening infection in the abdominal cavity.<\/p>\n<p>After the organ was removed, doctors were shocked to find it riddled with enterobius vermicularis, commonly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/16963456\/pinworms-symptoms-and-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pinworms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pinworm-infested appendix\u2026 drove the patient\u2019s initial presentation and clinical deterioration,&#8221; the medical team from Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, reported in <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cureus.com\/articles\/354543-a-case-of-appendiceal-pinworms-in-an-adolescent-patient#!\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Cureus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pinworm infections are common, especially among children aged six to 15.<\/p>\n<p>They spread easily through tiny eggs found on contaminated hands, surfaces, or food. <\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Insane&#8217; X-ray shows bloke &#8216;full of eggs&#8217; after doing one thing wrong in the kitchen<\/p>\n<p>Once eaten, the eggs hatch in the intestines, and adult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/34565941\/largest-human-parasite-wriggling-cooking-mistake\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worms<\/a> can cause itching around the anus, particularly at night.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>In rare cases, pinworms can cause more serious complications, such as urinary tract infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/30844033\/uti-urinary-tract-infection-untreated-risk-deadly-sepsis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UTIs<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In very severe cases, infections in other parts of the body.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NHS, treatment involves a single dose of mebendazole, with a second dose recommended after two weeks if reinfection is suspected. <\/p>\n<p>All household members should be treated simultaneously, even if they are asymptomatic. <\/p>\n<p>Strict hygiene measures are crucial to prevent reinfection, including regular handwashing, daily bathing, and washing bedding and clothing at high temperatures.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>The patient was treated with albendazole, another anti-parasitic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/medicines-vitamins-vaccines\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medicine<\/a>, and made a full recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors stress the importance of considering parasitic infections when diagnosing abdominal pain, especially when classic appendicitis symptoms are missing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This case highlights the diagnostic challenge of elucidating Enterobius vermicularis as the likely etiology of a patient presenting with appendicitis,\u201d the report concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Common mistakes putting you at risk of worms<\/p>\n<p>People often put themselves at risk by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not washing their hands properly after using the toilet or changing nappies.<\/li>\n<li>Scratching the anal area (common with threadworms) and then touching surfaces or food without washing hands.<\/li>\n<li>Walking barefoot in areas where the soil might be contaminated (a risk for hookworms, more common abroad).<\/li>\n<li>Eating under cooked meat or fish (a risk for tapeworms) or unwashed fruits and vegetables.<\/li>\n<li>Not treating everyone in the household at the same time, leading to re-infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Look to avoid these things as best you can.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"DOCTORS were shocked to discover pinworms living inside a teenager&#8217;s appendix.
