{"id":447159,"date":"2025-09-24T01:00:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T01:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/447159\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T01:00:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T01:00:16","slug":"former-captain-sarah-hunter-urges-england-to-stay-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/447159\/","title":{"rendered":"Former captain Sarah Hunter urges England to \u2018stay in\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/England-World-Cup-2014.jpeg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"\/>Sarah Hunter (left, holding trophy) was part of the 2014 World Cup winning side &#8211;  (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/england-rugby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">England<\/a> captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/sarah-hunter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Hunter<\/a> has urged the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/red-roses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red Roses<\/a> to stay in the moment as they take on Canada in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/womens-rugby-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup<\/a> final.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter was part of the side that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-union\/international\/england-vs-canada-match-report-england-win-women-s-world-cup-9674879.html\" title=\"Women&#039;s Rugby World Cup final 2014: England finally end 20 years of hurt with triumph over Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">triumphed in Paris in 2014 against the same opposition<\/a>, starting at No 8 and playing a key role as England secured their second World Cup crown.<\/p>\n<p>She subsequently skippered her nation unsuccessfully in finals in 2017 and 2022, before stepping into a role as a defence coach under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/john-mitchell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Mitchell<\/a> following her playing retirement.<\/p>\n<p>While four survivors of 2014 \u2013 Alex Matthews, Marlie Packer, Emily Scarratt and Natasha Hunt \u2013 remain part of Mitchell\u2019s squad, the head coach can also draw on Hunter\u2019s vast experience as England\u2019s most capped player and long-time leader.<\/p>\n<p>And the 40-year-old has urged the Red Roses to stay focussed on their processes as they look to achieve World Cup triumph on home soil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hopefully bringing that calmness, that confidence in and just trusting what the plan is and each other and staying in the moment,\u201d Hunter said of her role this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look back to 2014 when we won and that week of the final and day of the final everyone just felt really relaxed and calm. They knew what their role was and what they were going to go out and do. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t make it any bigger than we needed to and you try and instil that into the players that you know their job, the game plan and how to execute it. From your experience you are a little support blanket, if they need something you can help with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/England-coaching-staff-psdssfld.jpeg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"\/>Sarah Hunter (left) is now part of England&#8217;s coaching staff (Action Images via Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>The final will be played in front of a record attendance for women\u2019s rugby, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/rugby\/rugby-union\/ellie-kildunne-england-meg-jones-canada-twickenham-b2830870.html\" title=\"Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup: Ellie Kildunne shrugs off England\u2019s record in finals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sell-out crowd of about 82,000<\/a> set to attend Allianz Stadium in Twickenham.<\/p>\n<p>For Hunter, the change is vast since her first tournament in 2010, where most of the competition was played at Harlequins\u2019 training ground in Guildford before the final was held at the Twickenham Stoop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just have to make it as normal as possible,\u201d she reflected. \u201cJust because we have got this big game doesn\u2019t mean we should change things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving played in 2010 when we were at Surrey Sports Park playing our pool games there, it shows how the game has grown. The fans have been incredible getting behind all the teams, whether it is Canada or Samoa.
