{"id":447773,"date":"2025-09-24T11:11:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T11:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/447773\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T11:11:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T11:11:13","slug":"arun-district-council-responds-to-royal-british-legion-campaign-with-new-support-for-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/447773\/","title":{"rendered":"Arun District Council responds to Royal British Legion campaign with new support for veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aiir-c-news-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/68d297a8c6f6d.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"aiir-c-news-article__abstract\">\n            Arun District Council has approved new measures to support veterans, in response to the Royal British Legion\u2019s Credit Their Service campaign.\n        <\/p>\n<p>At a recent Housing and Wellbeing Committee meeting, councillors voted unanimously to disregard military compensation when veterans apply for housing benefit or disabled facilities grants.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, compensation payments counted as income in means-tested assessments. The change means veterans will no longer be penalised, ensuring fairer access to support.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Mark Turner MBE, Armed Forces Champion at Arun District Council, said:\u00a0\u201cThis is about doing the right thing. Our veterans have served with honour and deserve a system that recognises their sacrifice, not one that penalises them for it. Their service is often very challenging, and their life afterwards can be equally challenging, so I\u2019m proud that the council is supporting the Royal British Legion\u2019s campaign and standing up for our Armed Forces community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, The Royal British Legion welcomed the decision, stating:\u00a0\u201cThe Royal British Legion congratulates Arun District Council for responding positively to the \u2018Credit Their Service\u2019 campaign. Up and down the country, some councils continue to unfairly treat Armed Forces compensation as income\u00a0in means-tested benefits. It\u2019s really good news for the Armed Forces community in the Arun area that the council has taken action to remove this injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Pearce, Director of Campaigns, Policy and Research at The Royal British Legion, added:\u00a0\u201cWe want to thank Arun District Council for working with us and doing the right thing by veterans and the whole Armed Forces community.
