{"id":447958,"date":"2025-09-24T13:01:22","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T13:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/447958\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T13:01:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T13:01:22","slug":"julius-nielsen-completes-tiny-church-tolvkanten-in-copenhagen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/447958\/","title":{"rendered":"Julius Nielsen completes Tiny Church Tolvkanten in Copenhagen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Danish architect Julius Nielsen has created a small timber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/churches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">church<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/copenhagen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copenhagen<\/a>, which features a 12-sided hall symbolising the 12 apostles.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Copenhagen&#8217;s North Harbour district, the 75-square-metre building is named Tiny Church Tolvkanten after the Danish word for a dodecagon, or a 12-sided polygon.<\/p>\n<p>To emphasise this unusual geometry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juliusnielsenoffice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nielsen<\/a> designed the church to have an austere but warm feel, eschewing ornamentation to instead focus on its timber structure and finishes, which were created in collaboration with flooring manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/dinesen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dinesen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2250551 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/julius-nielsen-tiny-church-tolvkanten-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of Tiny Church Tolvkanten in Copenhagen\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Julius Nielsen has created Tiny Church Tolvkanten in Copenhagen<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 12-sided geometry is both pragmatic and symbolic: referencing the 12 apostles while establishing a non-hierarchical order that gathers the community around a shared centre,&#8221; Nielsen told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design shifts focus from the use of religious iconography to emphasis on atmosphere, testing whether architecture \u2013 carefully considered and distilled to light, geometry, and material \u2013 is enough to sustain the gravity of ritual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beneath an oculus skylight, Tiny Church Tolvkanten&#8217;s 12-sided hall is framed by slender spruce columns, with its lower level cloaked in wool and cotton drapes and the upper ceilings and roof finished in lime-washed spruce boards.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2250552 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/julius-nielsen-tiny-church-tolvkanten-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Timber structure of the Tiny Church Tolvkanten by Julius Nielsen\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Timber was used for the structure<\/p>\n<p>Below, the hall&#8217;s floor is made from surplus Douglas fir planks from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinesen.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dinesen<\/a>, with varying widths and lengths used to optimise material use and laid in a radial web or &#8220;cake-slice&#8221; pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Pared-back metal sconces are attached to each column, while exposed bulb lights hang from the ceiling above, emphasising what Nielsen describes as a &#8220;spartan ethos&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2250553 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/julius-nielsen-tiny-church-tolvkanten-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of timber hall by Julius Nielsen\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It contains a 12-sided hall<\/p>\n<p>Surrounding Tiny Church Tolvkanten&#8217;s central hall is a 12-sided veranda framed by timber columns, which serves the purpose of a narthex \u2013 the entrance porch of a traditional church building.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/19\/hojvangen-church-henning-larsen-skanderborg-denmark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/henning-larsen-church-hojvangen-skanderborg-denmark_dezeen_2364_sq_16-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"H\u00f8jvangen Church by Henning Larsen in Skanderborg, Denmark\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Henning Larsen designs Danish church as &#8220;space for reflection, gathering and encounter&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This outer ring of the church was also used to discreetly house a kitchenette, storage, washroom and service areas, allowing the central hall to be as open and uncluttered as possible.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the warm, lighter tones of the interior, the exterior of Tiny Church Tolvkanten has been finished with spruce boards with a matte-black finish.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2250555 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/julius-nielsen-tiny-church-tolvkanten-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"View of Tiny Church Tolvkanten in Copenhagen\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>An oculus skylight illuminates the interior of Tiny Church Tolvkanten<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The surrounding colonnade transforms the act of arrival into something heightened,&#8221;
