Army bomb experts have been called to a Co Antrim school following the discovery of a \u201cpotentially unstable explosive substance\u201d in a science classroom. <\/p>\n

The PSNI and ATO were notified following a routine safety inspection at the school in Randalstown on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service crews are also at the scene in the Craigstown Road area where a controlled explosion is due to be carried out. <\/p>\n

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Patton said: \u201cAt this stage, an evacuation has not been deemed necessary.<\/p>\n

“The substance has been secured by Ammunition Technical Officers and a small planned controlled explosion is due to take place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inspector Patton confirmed only a small quantity of the substance was present and said the safety of children is a top priority. <\/p>\n

“I want to reassure the community that we do not suspect any criminal act, and there is no immediate risk,\u201d they said. <\/p>\n

“The safety of the children and staff at the school is our priority and we are carrying out these actions out of an abundance of caution.<\/p>\n
