At least Rory McIlroy can see the funny side of his missed putt at the Masters now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Northern Irishman<\/a> spoke to the media in a shared press conference with close pal Shane Lowry<\/a> ahead of the team-based Zurich Classic.<\/p>\n

McIlroy and Lowry won last year’s edition of the tournament via a play-off against Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer.<\/p>\n

It was a clutch putt from Lowry that sent the contest to a play-off last year, a feat perhaps a little surprising given the Irishman broke out a new putter in New Orelans.<\/p>\n

“I certainly think it’s more fun to win as a team,” McIlroy said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a shared experience. I think that’s a big part of it.<\/p>\n

“But yeah, I think we can both look back to last year here … Shane used a new putter here last year for the first time. But he held that putt in regulation.”<\/p>\n

Lowry then joked about how small the putt was as he recreated the distance with a hand gesture as if to say it wasn’t anything special.<\/p>\n

It prompted a hilarious response from McIlroy.<\/p>\n

“Hey, I’ve certainly missed shorter,” McIlroy said.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old added: “Just stuff like that. He (Lowry) was struggling with his putting, he came here with a new putter.<\/p>\n

“He held a three-footer under pressure. That’s an important thing.<\/p>\n

“Those little things can kick you on to the rest of the year.”<\/p>\n

The laughter from McIlroy, Lowry and the gathered press was because the Northern Irishman missed a putt of a similar distance that would have won him the Masters<\/a> in regulation.<\/p>\n

McIlroy got himself just four feet away from the pin thanks to a delightful chip out of the bunker and onto the green on the par-four 18th.<\/p>\n

However, McIlroy’s putt rolled agonisingly wide of the hole.<\/p>\n

He made no mistake with the second putt, but it was only good enough for a bogey to force a play-off against Justin Rose.<\/p>\n

Despite the nerves, McIlroy showed a remarkable amount of poise to produce a par in the play-off to win the Masters<\/a> as Rose mustered a bogey.<\/p>\n

McIlroy’s play-off magic ended his lengthy wait for a maiden green jacket.<\/p>\n

It also ensured the Northern Irishman joined an exclusive club of just six players to have completed the grand slam, a feat achieved when a player wins all four majors in golf.<\/p>\n
