London Mayor Sadiq Khan<\/a> amped up his criticism of President Donald Trump <\/a>on Wednesday, calling him \u201cracist,\u201d \u201csexist,\u201d \u201cmisogynistic,\u201d and Islamophobic\u201d in response to the president\u2019s comments at the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n

Trump called Khan a \u201cterrible mayor\u201d during his address before the U.N. on Tuesday, suggesting that London \u201cwants to go to Sharia law.\u201d Trump\u2019s comments came just after he returned home from a state visit to the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The feud between the two leaders, who have vastly different political views, dates back to Trump\u2019s first presidential candidacy in 2016. Khan has consistently criticized Trump\u2019s comments on Islam and stood against Trump\u2019s first-term travel ban on muslim-majority countries.<\/p>\n

Khan, London\u2019s first Muslim mayor, responded to Trump\u2019s U.N. comments in an interview with London reporters on Tuesday, saying \u201cwhen people behave in a certain way, you\u2019ve got to believe them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic, and he is Islamophobic,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n

Trump focused on mass migration to Europe in his U.N. speech, zeroing in on London and calling out Khan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, a terrible, terrible mayor, and it\u2019s been so changed, so changed,\u201d Trump said. \u201cNow they want to go to Sharia law, but you\u2019re in a different country, you can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharia law, the religious laws of Islam, serves as the foundation of the code in countries<\/a> such as Afghanistan and Iran. Khan has never called for Sharia law to be implemented in London. However, Sharia councils have existed in the U.K. in advisory roles since the 1980s. They have \u201cno official legal or constitutional role in the UK\u201d and mainly exist to rule in divorces, according to a House of Commons<\/a> briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not going to dignify his appalling and bigoted comments with a response,\u201d a spokesperson for Khan\u2019s office told the London Standard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Khan told reporters<\/a> on Tuesday that \u201crecord numbers of Americans\u201d are moving to London and that he is \u201cliving rent free\u201d inside Trump\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think people are wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multicultural, progressive, successful city that means I appear to be living rent free inside Donald Trump\u2019s head,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comments came in the larger context of his argument on mass migration to Europe. Around one-third<\/a> of the U.K. foreign-born population is centered in London.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth the immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe if something is not done immediately.
