The Southampton star pegged his side back on level terms 14 minutes from the end in the Carabao Cup Third Round clash, cancelling out a first Reds strike for big-money frontman Alexander Isak shortly before half-time.<\/p>\n

Charles was, however, unable to prevent the Saints from falling to a 2-1 defeat, with another of Arne Slot\u2019s summer signings Hugo Ekitike tapping home the winner on 85 minutes \u2013 and being subsequently sent off after receiving a second yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration.<\/p>\n

But the 25-times-capped international favourite admitted finding the net for the first time in Southampton colours was a special moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, it’s a good place to score my first goal for Saints,\u201d the 21-year-old told BBC Radio Solent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just got my first professional goal last year, and to score at Anfield is incredible.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing on after half-time, it’s a weird time to come on, but I thought I settled into the game well and I thought we played some good bits.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe missed a sitter and then conceded straight after in the first-half, but I thought we responded well after half-time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Southampton have endured a difficult return to life in the EFL Championship following their relegation from the Premier League in 2024\/25.<\/p>\n

They sit in 19th place with just six points from their first six League matches, the most recent of which was a 3-1 reverse away to Hull City on Saturday.<\/p>\n

But Charles \u2013 who played alongside younger brother and Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pierce on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last campaign \u2013 has backed the south coast outfit to take the positives from their performance at Anfield into their home date with League leaders Middlesbrough on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Saturday, we played some good bits, but it was the same mistakes at the back and not being able to create chances and score goals,\u201d continued Charles, who joined Southampton from Manchester City in 2023 and was a 51st-minute substitute in the Liverpool clash.<\/p>\n
