A nightclub and music venue will continue with its new \u2018bring your own booze\u2019 policy \u2014 despite Greater Manchester Police\u2019s \u2018grave concerns\u2019.<\/p>\n

XLR, in student heartland Withington, hit the headlines earlier this month by announcing plans<\/a> to allow revellers take their own alcohol inside. Owner Chris Hindle said he dreamt up the idea because he believes clubs have \u2018become very corporate, very money grab\u2019.<\/p>\n

However, before XLR\u2019s first BYOB night on September 19, Greater Manchester Police and Manchester council attempted to block XLR\u2019s bid to open for an extra hour for special events in freshers\u2019 week.<\/p>\n

Cops said they held \u2018grave concerns regarding this new model\u2019, adding: \u201cThe processes for safely managing the consumption of alcohol appear weak and as yet are untested.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday (September 24), XLR withdrew the applications for 3am opening on September 27 and October 4, but confirmed the BYOB policy will remain in place.<\/p>\n

Chris Hindle said police and council officers \u2018were happy with how we operated\u2019 during a visit on Saturday (September 20).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve done three so far \u2014 last Friday and Saturday, and last night (Tuesday, September 23),\u201d Chris told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one was bringing in anything stupid. Even the police said that. They expected people to have copious amounts of alcohol, but they did not.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are respecting it. People are having a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Punters have to meet strict conditions to take advantage of the policy, like not bringing in glass bottles and leaving the venue to buy more drinks. They also have to dispose of any remaining booze at home-time.<\/p>\n

Anyone bringing in \u2018excessive\u2019 amounts of alcohol \u2018would be asked to go or refused entry\u2019, Chris added. XLR recommends ravers bring eight cans or a 70CL of spirits for a night out, and the most popular choice thus far have been cans of beer and hard seltzers.<\/p>\n

Chris went on: \u201cCustomers are really enjoying it. Everyone has said it\u2019s a good concept. A lot of people said thank you, they have been stressing how much money they spend on nights out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Initial signs are good for the venue. While the bar\u2019s turnover has taken a hit, Chris said profits are \u2018the same, if not more\u2019, as the cost of buying liquor wholesale has dropped.<\/p>\n

XLR now makes more money on ticket prices, with a typical entry fee jumping from \u00a33 to \u00a37 last year to \u00a310 to \u00a320 now.<\/p>\n
