{"id":448708,"date":"2025-09-24T20:06:28","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T20:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/448708\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T20:06:28","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T20:06:28","slug":"increase-in-us-citizens-applying-for-asylum-here-since-trumps-second-term-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/448708\/","title":{"rendered":"Increase in US citizens applying for asylum here since Trump\u2019s second term \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There has been an unprecedented surge in the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/\">US<\/a> nationals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\">applying for asylum<\/a> in Ireland since the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s second term in the Oval Office, new figures have revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of 76 Americans have sought international protection in Ireland since the start of this year, compared to 22 during the whole of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asylum applicants are required to demonstrate a \u201cwell-founded fear of being persecuted\u201d on specific grounds, including race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was also a marked increase in the number of US citizens applying for Irish passports since the beginning of last year. A total of 31,825 applications were received in 2024 \u2013 the highest number recorded since 2016, when Mr Trump won his first term in the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The trend has continued this year, with a further 26,111 applications from US citizens for Irish passports submitted during the first eight months of 2025, which is more than was received in the whole of 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">New data published by Justice Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\">Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> in response to a parliamentary question from Independent Ireland TD Ken O\u2019Flynn reveals a recent spike in the number of applications for international protection among US nationals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some 13 applications for asylum in Ireland were made by Americans during 2022, followed by another 18 in 2023.
