However, since 2020, the number of tonnes carried grew at an average annual rate of 0.1%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">The largest product group transported in terms of tonnes was \u2018metal ores, mining and quarrying products\u2019, accounting for 3.01 billion tonnes, or 23.0% of the EU total. This was followed by \u2018food products, beverages and tobacco\u2019 (1.59 billion tonnes; 12.2%), and \u2018other non-metallic mineral products\u2019 (1.56 billion tonnes; 11.9%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In terms of <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Road_freight_transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">road freight transport<\/a> performance measured in <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Tonne-kilometre_(tkm)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tonne-kilometres<\/a> (tkm), total EU performance in 2024 was 0.7% higher than in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">The leading category of goods was \u2018food products, beverages and tobacco\u2019, accounting for 312.2 billion tkm, a 16.7% share of the EU total. This was followed by \u2018grouped goods: a mixture of types of goods transported together\u2019 (236.5 billion tkm; 12.7%) and \u2018agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing products\u2019 (207.6 billion tkm; 11.1%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/40308533-8dfb-4a58-bb52-d630c972fa13\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Road freight transport by product group in the EU, 2024. Lithuania, Portugal and Slovakia were the only countries with shares below 2.0% in both 2023 and 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/491885ad-dacc-325b-66e3-6d21f82b9b00\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Road freight transport of dangerous goods, 2023 and 2024. The highest positive rates were recorded in Bulgaria (+13.0% per year on average), Romania (+9.6%) and Lithuania (+8.1%).
