The four remaining schools, Hazelwood IC, Larne HS, Markethill HS and St Joseph\u2019s Boys\u2019 are planning to start in the coming weeks. The nine schools participating in the pilot are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\" publication=\"belfastlive\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Glenlola Collegiate, Bangor<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Friends\u2019 School, Lisburn<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Hazelwood Integrated College, Belfast<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">St Genevieve\u2019s High School, Belfast<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">St Joseph\u2019s Boys\u2019, Londonderry<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">St Fanchea\u2019s College, Enniskillen<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Larne High School<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Markethill High School<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">St Ronan\u2019s College, Lurgan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">Following a procurement process, Odyssey Education was appointed in June 2025 to supply the lockable mobile phone pouches for the pilot and provide associated training, guidance and support for the school pilot project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">During a visit to St Ronan\u2019s College, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/lurgan\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Lurgan<\/a>, one of the schools taking part in the pilot programme, Education Minister Paul Givan said: \u201cSince becoming <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/department-of-education\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Education Minister<\/a>, I\u2019ve taken time to carefully review the evidence and listen to the concerns of parents, teachers and school leaders about mobile phone use in schools. There is growing unease about the amount of time young people spend on smartphones, and research increasingly points to a link between excessive use and declining mental health among adolescents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">\u201cIn response, I committed to piloting a phone-free solution that would prevent pupils from using their devices during the school day\u2014helping them to fully engage with learning, social interaction, and all aspects of school life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">The Minister continued: \u201cCountries around the world are taking action to reduce phone use in schools. While some schools here in Northern Ireland have already introduced their own policies, I believe we need a consistent, evidence-based approach. This will ensure<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/student-life\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> pupils<\/a> cannot use their phones during the school day and will allow us to evaluate the impacts of reduced usage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">\u201cI want to provide reassurance that flexibility will be provided for those students who need access to their smartphone during the school day, for reasons of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/health\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a>, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/disability\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">disability <\/a>or other needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">To help to understand the impact of the study, King\u2019s College London has been appointed to carry-out an external evaluation of the phone-free pilot. The research will provide independent and objective insights into the pilot&#8217;s effectiveness and outcomes, and the research findings will provide the evidence to inform future decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">Mr Givan added: \u201cThis is a pilot initiative, and every aspect of using lockable pouches during the school day will be independently evaluated by King\u2019s College London. Their research will help us understand the real impact of reduced phone use in schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"belfastlive\">\u201cI encourage everyone involved\u2014students, staff, and parents\u2014to share their experiences openly and honestly over the coming months.
