{"id":450681,"date":"2025-09-25T15:40:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T15:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/450681\/"},"modified":"2025-09-25T15:40:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T15:40:17","slug":"netanyahus-flight-to-us-takes-extended-detour-avoiding-most-european-airspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/450681\/","title":{"rendered":"Netanyahu\u2019s flight to US takes extended detour, avoiding most European airspace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s plane took an extended detour on Thursday as he traveled to New York for the UN General Assembly in order to avoid the airspace of all countries along the route except Italy and Greece, lengthening the journey by hundreds of kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>The trajectory, visible on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/data\/aircraft\/4x-isr#3c5d3308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flight Tracker<\/a>, may have been an effort to avoid problems related to the International Criminal Court\u2019s warrant for Netanyahu\u2019s arrest over alleged Israeli war crimes in Gaza \u2014 charges Israel denies.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the State Parties to the ICC in Europe have said that, pursuant to the arrest warrant, they would detain Netanyahu if he were present on their soil.<\/p>\n<p>The detour added 600 kilometers (372 miles) to the journey, the Haaretz newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>There was no official reason given for the unusual route, and ahead of departure, Israel had asked for authorization for Netanyahu\u2019s plane to fly over French airspace, according to a French diplomatic official.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The French gave permission, according to the official, though the plane did not make use of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey decided to take another route, and we don\u2019t know the reason,\u201d said the official.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/02\/IMG_2642.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3473436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_2642-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Wing of Zion plane ahead of a trip by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States, February 2, 2025. (Avi Ohayon\/GPO)<\/p>\n<p>When the premier flew to the US in February, that trip, too, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/netanyahu-flight-path-to-us-lengthened-due-to-concerns-over-icc-warrant-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lengthened<\/a>, in part over concerns about the ICC warrant. He also reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/report-netanyahu-forced-to-cancel-azerbaijan-visit-because-turkey-barred-him-from-airspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">canceled<\/a> a trip to Azerbaijan in May to avoid flying over Turkey, whose President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a fierce critic of Israel who has praised the Hamas terror group, welcomed the arrest warrant. Turkey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/erdogan-admits-to-blocking-herzogs-flight-to-cop29-from-using-turkish-airspace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refuses<\/a>\u00a0to allow Wing of Zion to pass through its airspace.<\/p>\n<p>The ICC, based in The Hague, has indicted Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged crimes committed during Israel\u2019s war with Hamas in Gaza. It also issued warrants for several Hamas leaders who have all since been killed by Israel, for crimes committed during the Palestinian terror group\u2019s cross-border attack on October 7, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Some 1,200 people were killed in the invasion, most of them civilians, and 251 were taken hostage. Terror groups in Gaza are still holding 47 of those captured that day hostage, and Hamas is also holding the body of a soldier killed in Gaza in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 65,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters.<\/p>\n<p>Israel says it has killed over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza\u2019s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tIs The Times of Israel important to you?\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If so, we have a request.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Every day, even during war, our journalists keep you abreast of the most important developments that merit your attention.
