\n\tWhile Amazon Prime Video France will keep up with this popular comedy franchises such as \u00a0\u201cLOL: Last One Laughing,\u201d the streamer looks to move beyond its historical male-skewing base to lure more women and younger demos with new romances, as well as high-profile adaptations of books by authors like Virginie Despentes<\/a> and Jo\u00ebl Dicker. <\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to Variety ahead of the lineup presentation at a swank Paris event on Thursday, Thomas Dubois, the head of France and Japan at Amazon MGM Studios, unpacked the streamer\u2019s plans to try new things, as well as balance out comedy, new romance and prestige drama. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s really about continuing to nurture the talented comedy family that we\u2019ve built and allow them to keep pushing boundaries,\u201d Dubois said, \u201cand also about breaking into new territories and promoting new faces, whether in front of or behind the camera.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tPrime Video will be \u201cdoubling down\u201d on series, building on success of \u201cCulte,\u201d its hit show inspired by the real-life events behind the French adaptation of \u201cBig Brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe platform is launching \u201cGlam Squad,\u201d a six-episode series from an original idea by Rebecca Zlotowski<\/a>, the filmmaker whose latest movie \u201cVie Priv\u00e9e\u201d starring Jodie Foster world premiered at Cannes. Zlotowski co-wrote the series, and co-directed it with Agathe Riedinger whose feature debut \u201cWild Diamond\u201d competed at Cannes last year. \u201cGlam Squad\u201d features a cast of \u201cnew faces handpicked by Zlotowski,\u201d Dubois said, referring to Antonia Buresi, Lucie Goudeau, Natacha Krief and Arcadi Radef.<\/p>\n

\n\tZlotowski previously made \u201cLes Sauvages,\u201d a Canal+ series which was a critical success and showcased emerging talent that went on to break through, notably Dali Benssalah, Sofiane Zermani\u00a0and Souheila Yacoub. \u201cGlam Squad\u201d follows the exhilarating adventures of four young beauty experts with strong personalities who work closely with stars, from the Paris Fashion Week to the the Cannes Film Festival. <\/p>\n

\n\tPrime Video is also developing a pair of original projects based on the works of acclaimed authors: Joel Dicker<\/a>\u2018s bestseller \u201cUn animal sauvage,\u201d and Virginie Despentes\u2019 \u201cLes jolies choses.\u201d The latter will be adapted into a series created and co-written by Clara Levy, whose previous credits include \u201cCulte.\u201d Benjamin Elalouf\u2019s Moonshaker (\u201cThe Goldman Case\u201d) is producing with Babylone Hills.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn order to attract female viewers, Prime Video France will be tapping into the trend of new romances, following previous international hits such as the \u201cCulpa Mia\u201d trilogy and German series \u201cMaxton Hall.\u201d As previously announced, the streamer is adapting \u201cCampus Drivers,\u201d based on C.S. Quill\u2019s five-book series, which will start shooting next month with a cast led by Carmen Kassovitz (\u201cThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon\u201d) and Baptiste Masseline (\u201cNudes,\u201d \u201cMixte\u201d). Produced by a label of Empreinte Digitale, \u201cCampus Drivers\u201d will be directed Tom Goris and Vianney Lebasque.Dubois said \u201cCampus Drivers\u201d will aim at leveraging the massive fan communities around these novels.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother new romance project in the pipeline is \u201cToi + moi \u2013 seuls contre tous,\u201d a film adaptation of Emma Green\u2019s \u201cToi + Moi\u201d which started filming in August with up-and-coming actors, Vittoria de Savoia and Lucas Barski. It\u2019s produced by a label of Alain Attal\u2019s Tresor Films (\u201cBeating Hearts\u201d), and is directed by a first-time female director, Manon Gaurin, \u201caligning with Prime Video\u2019s goal of turning the spotlight on women behind the camera, as well as young talent,\u201d said Dubois. <\/p>\n

\n\tAnother trend that Prime Video is diving into is the survival movie genre. The banner has commissioned a new film titled \u201cTemp\u00eate,\u201d directed by Edouard Salier (\u201cLes Sentinelles\u201d) and set against the backdrop of the huge storm that struck France in December 1999 and killed dozens of people. The story revolves around Chlo\u00e9, a visually impared teenager who rebels against her over-protective mother and runs away to attend a party hosted by high school heartthrobe, Erwan. But the party turns into a disaster as the storm leaves Ewran and Chlo\u00e9 stranded in the dark. The movie is produced by Screenline, the Banijay company run by Alexia de Laroche-Joubert, and the outfit Vodka & Caramel. The role of Erwan is played by Bach Buquen, an influencer with over 10 million followers on TikTok. \u201cHe\u2019s a huge star on social media,\u201d said Dubois. \u201cHe\u2019s made a name for himself in less than two years, both in France and abroad, all the brands are fighting over him and we\u2019ve identified as having great potential.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe executive pointed out Prime Video has been working with influencers on several formats before, notably the film \u201cMcWalter\u201d which starred Mister V who has 6.4 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe like to connect different worlds together, working with experienced producers who are experts in their field, and bringing in fresh faces and influencers who have their communities on social media,\u201d Dubois said. <\/p>\n

\n\tAnother movie on the streamer\u2019s roster is \u201cLes Batards,\u201d Mourad Winter\u2019s crime comedy film set in 1990\u2019s Paris, revolving around a young man who finds out he has siblings after his father, a ringleader, gets shot, and takes over the family business with them. The film is directed by Mourad Winter and produced by a label of Iconoclast. Florence Foresti stars as a pimp, alongside a cast that also includes Kad Merad, Hakim Jemili, Laura Felpin and Benjamin Trani\u00e9. <\/p>\n

\n\tPrime Video will also continue to be a top destination for comedies, following its blockbuster comedy format \u201cLOL: Last One Laughing<\/a>\u201d which has been adapted in over 20 territories, as well as \u201cComedy Class\u201d and \u201cLiar\u2019s Club.\u201d The streamer unveiled the cast of its spinoff \u201cLOL in Reel Life<\/a>\u201d which will feature six celebrity contestants, including singer Clara Lucani and actor Franck Dubosc, who will be at the airport Charles de Gaulle near Paris where they\u2019ll interact with anonymous people who don\u2019t know about the game and will be filled by hidden cameras. <\/p>\n

\n\tAlso in the unscripted comedy space, Prime Video showed the first images of \u201cTout simplement fan,\u201d a six-part series reuniting the dup Eric Judor and Ramzy Bedia. The original format pranks fans by inviting them on the set of what they believe is a \u201cZorro\u201d series by Judor and Bedia in Spain for a week. The hybrid show, which weaves in some fiction, lured a strong cast including Laurent Lafitte, Niels Schneider, Jean-Pascal Zadi and Melha Bedia. Dubois said the level of cast matched Prime Video\u2019s ambition to deliver premium unscripted that stands out from what linear TV is doing.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking of talent with a huge following among young audiences, Prime Video has ordered \u201cPaul,\u201d a new series directed by and starring Paul Mirabel as himself. The fictional story sees Paul Mirabel struggling with a lack of inspiration six weeks before getting on stage for his next one-man-show. \u201cTo rediscover it, he decides to embark on some rather unusual experiences which take him down a path he never expected. It\u2019s hilarious, but also moving,\u201d said Dubois. Produced by an Iconoclast label, \u201cPaul\u201d was co-written by Mourad Winter, Paul Mirabel, Yoann Gromb and Nathanael Munnich. <\/p>\n
