He\u2019s considered one of the last great movie stars \u2013 not just a permanent A-lister, but one who is expected to cover the cost of his salary and then some on a given opening weekend \u2013 and DiCaprio says the box office metric is as crucial as ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn the road promoting his <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/paul-thomas-anderson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paul-thomas-anderson\" data-tag=\"paul-thomas-anderson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Thomas Anderson<\/a> epic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/one-battle-after-another\/\" id=\"auto-tag_one-battle-after-another\" data-tag=\"one-battle-after-another\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Battle After Another<\/a>,\u201d DiCaprio caught up with Variety to discuss the importance of movie ticket sales in a landscape thrown off balance by unvetted streaming data and social engagement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWe asked DiCaprio if he thinks box office numbers still matter in the new world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think there\u2019s just an inundation of content and so much production going on now \u2014 which is a good thing, obviously. But I think box office is important because it means people are in the seats going to theater, going to have that communal experience,\u201d said DiCaprio, sitting for interviews with his \u201cOne Battle\u201d costar Benicio del Toro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Oscar winner said his latest was \u201cuniquely crafted and specialized\u201d to the moviegoing experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI mean, Paul shot this movie in Vista Vision \u2014 cameras that have rarely been used since the early \u201860s. He wants people to have that immersive experience and make an action film that\u2019s unexpected, tactile, realistic and something that is probably a lot different than what we\u2019ve been saturated with. In that respect, box office is very important,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnderson inspires cult-like devotion from cinephiles and Hollywood\u2019s power set, but the director\u2019s commercial track record is another story. \u201cOne Battle\u201d is surely the highest budgeted film Anderson\u2019s ever made \u2013 $130 million for production, on the low end of a range of reported figures \u2013 which places pressure on the film to earn big around the world to cover its cost. Variety <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/box-office\/one-battle-after-another-leonardo-dicaprio-box-office-opening-weekend-projection-1236526905\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Wednesday that the film will open this weekend to around $20 million to $25 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI would only hope that people go out to the theater and experience it the way it\u2019s meant to be seen,\u201d DiCaprio concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe film has euphoric reviews thus far, and was instantly tipped as a frontrunner in multiple Oscar categories when the film premiered earlier in September. DiCaprio plays Bob, a revolutionary in hiding with his teen daughter (Chase Infiniti) after his activist group the French 75 disbands in chaos. In the shadow of a former lover (Teyana Taylor) and under the protection of an ultra-chill revolutionary in arms (del Toro), DiCaprio is swept up in a world of violence and revenge \u2014 to say nothing of the terrifying oddball military colonel (Sean Penn) out for blood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDiCaprio\u2019s last theatrical opening was the Oscar contender \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon,\u201d directed by Martin Scorsese.
