{"id":450992,"date":"2025-09-25T18:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T18:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/450992\/"},"modified":"2025-09-25T18:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T18:39:13","slug":"roberto-firmino-had-to-stop-shirt-off-celebration-after-unwanted-record-liverpool-fc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/450992\/","title":{"rendered":"Roberto Firmino had to stop &#8216;shirt off&#8217; celebration after unwanted record &#8211; Liverpool FC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/hugo-ekitike\/\" title=\"Hugo Ekitike\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugo Ekitike<\/a> is not the first Liverpool player to be booked for taking his shirt off after scoring, with <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/roberto-firmino\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Roberto Firmino<\/a> famously breaking the record for excessive celebration.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ekitike will miss Liverpool\u2019s trip to <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/crystal-palace\" rel=\"noopener\">Crystal Palace<\/a> in the <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/premier-league\" rel=\"noopener\">Premier League<\/a> after being shown a second yellow card for celebrating his winner against <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/southampton\" rel=\"noopener\">Southampton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Frenchman removed his shirt after tapping in to make it 2-1 late on in the <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/tag\/league-cup\/\" title=\"Carabao Cup\" rel=\"noopener\">Carabao Cup<\/a> and, having after being booked for punching the ball away earlier in the game, was sent off by referee Thomas Bramall.<\/p>\n<p>It was the correct decision and <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/arne-slot\/\" title=\"Arne Slot\" rel=\"noopener\">Arne Slot<\/a> was rightly angry with his striker for picking up a \u201c<a data-mil=\"328001\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/2025\/09\/needless-and-stupid-arne-slots-blunt-view-on-hugo-ekitike-red-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">needless and stupid<\/a>\u201d suspension.<\/p>\n<p>That transgression brought back memories of a player Ekitike has already been compared to in leading the line for Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PA-49173260-600x404.jpg\" alt=\"Liverpool's Roberto Firmino celebrates scoring his side's first goal of the game during the FIFA Club World Cup final at the Khalifa International Stadium, Doha. No video emulation\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" class=\"lazy lazy-hidden alignnone size-medium wp-image-219700\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Firmino became renowned for shirt-off celebrations in his early seasons at Liverpool \u2013 so much so that he had to stop doing so after a record number of bookings.<\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian left the club two years ago while still holding the record for the most yellow cards for \u2018excessive celebration\u2019 since records began in the <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/premier-league\" rel=\"noopener\">Premier League<\/a> (five).<\/p>\n<p>Following another booking after a goal against <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/man-city\" rel=\"noopener\">Man City<\/a> in the league in January 2018, Firmino had been cautioned more times for excessive celebration than any other player in Europe\u2019s top five leagues since 2012\/13 (eight).<\/p>\n<p>He was booked two more times after scoring following that instance: for removing his shirt to mark his Club World Cup winner against Flamengo in 2019 and then leaping the advertising hoardings to celebrate with the away fans in the 2-0 win at <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/arsenal\" rel=\"noopener\">Arsenal<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/P2022-10-12-Rangers_Liverpool-34-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - Wednesday, October 12, 2022: Liverpool's Roberto Firmino celebrates after scoring his side's first equalising goal during the UEFA Champions League Group A matchday 4 game between Glasgow Rangers FC and Liverpool FC at Ibrox Stadium. (Photo by David Rawcliffe\/Propaganda)\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"lazy lazy-hidden alignnone size-medium wp-image-327888\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Sky Sports after the 2-1 victory over <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/southampton\" rel=\"noopener\">Southampton<\/a> at Anfield, vice-captain <a data-ail=\"328001\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisanfield.com\/liverpool-fc\/andy-robertson\/\" title=\"Andy Robertson\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Robertson<\/a> said he would be \u201cvery surprised if he does it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScoring a goal is always emotional, but he\u2019s obviously just forgot he\u2019s been booked,\u201d Robertson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one\u2019s stupidity, kicking the ball away, we know the rules around that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s two silly bookings to pick up and now we\u2019ll miss him for Saturday.
