It has been a long time since, but there are still almost 70,000 veterans still alive today and it\u2019s as important as ever to commemorate the allied victory and pay tribute to those now gone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> is to host numerous exhibitions, displays and commemorations, including four days of official events. Here\u2019s a run-down of what\u2019s in store for 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Beyond Victory, official events at Westminster Abbey <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/VE-Day.jpeg\" width=\"3816\" height=\"2729\" alt=\"VE Day\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A special season of events is to take place at Westminster Abbey this year. On VE Day and throughout the summer, ceremonies, displays and talks will pay homage to Britain\u2019s efforts 80 years ago. <\/p>\n<p>The invitation-only service \u2013 last year 25,000 people attended \u2013 is on May 8, though it will also be televised on the BBC. Before that, here\u2019s a diary of what\u2019s in store:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/ve-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VE Day<\/a> flypast in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> on May 5, which will include historic and current military aircraft, including Spitfires, Mosquitoes, Lancaster bombers, Hornets and Meteors, as well as the famous Red Arrows.<\/li>\n<li>The Cenotaph on Whitehall is to be draped in Union Jack flags and wreaths will be laid by dignitaries alongside a military procession along Whitehall to Buckingham Palace. <\/li>\n<li>Historic landmarks across the UK, including Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch and Tower Bridge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>, will be illuminated in British colours during the evening. <\/li>\n<li>On HMS Belfast, a street party will be held. The warship fired some of the opening shots on D Day in 1944 and protected Arctic convoys during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/second-world-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second World War<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Street parties, barbecues and community get togethers, supported by The Together Coalition and The Big Lunch, will be held across the country, celebrating and echoing the moments that happened 80 years ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A new installation of ceramic poppies will return to the Tower of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>. Almost 30,000 original flowers from the 2014 display \u2013 then used to commemorate the centenary of the First World War \u2013 will be put on display within the walls of the fortress. <\/li>\n<li>Historic landmarks across the UK, including Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch and the Tower of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>, will be illuminated in British colours during the evening. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1745456712_325_VE-Day.jpeg\" width=\"6720\" height=\"4480\" alt=\"VE Day\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Parliament Choir will be in concert inside Westminster Hall. This is expected to be televised. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The aforementioned thanksgiving service will take place at Westminster Abbey, as well as a concert at Horse Guards Parade, open to 10,000 members of the public and with military bands on show. Ticket details can be found via <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tickets.householddivision.org.uk\/beating-retreat\/\">tickets.householddivision.org.uk<\/a> though haven\u2019t yet been released.<\/li>\n<li>After the bank holiday spectacles, there will be further events to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/ve-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VE Day<\/a>\u2019s 80th anniversary throughout May and June. Bookings can be made via the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster-abbey.org\/\">Westminster Abbey website<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Westminster walking tours, selected dates<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blue Badge guide Katie Wignall from Look Up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> will lead guests on a reflective 90-minute walk around Westminster\u2019s monuments and memorials, telling stories that shaped the war and discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>\u2019s place in history and its wartime legacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Lunchtime talk: The People\u2019s Victory, May 14<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Historian professor Lucy Noakes will give a talk on emotion, grief and the anxieties of a nation during a period of profound unsettlement and change. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Panel: Destruction, Restoration, Commemoration, Tuesday 27<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As part of the V&amp;A\u2019s Culture in Crisis programme, a conversation led by a panel of experts will uncover stories of recovery and resilience in the face of abject sorrow and change. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>An evening with Sir Max Hastings: Commemoration and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/remembrance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Remembrance<\/strong><\/a><strong>, June 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The British journalist, historian and former Standard editor Sir Max Hastings will talk about why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/remembrance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remembrance<\/a> remains as vital as ever in honour of the bravery and sacrifice of British and Commonwealth personnel. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>An evening of dance, crafts, history and music is to be held in the gardens at Westminster Abbey, with swing and jive lessons for all comers. There will also be an opportunity to create origami cranes to display at twilight-lit memorials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1745456712_335_VE-Day.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" alt=\"VE Day\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is Remembrance still working? at the National Army Museum<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the National Army Museum in Chelsea, two grandchildren of high-ranking officers from opposite sides of the war will come together to discuss Remembrance and its place in modern times.<\/p>\n<p>Henry Montgomery, grandson of Field Marshal Bernard &#8216;Monty&#8217; Montgomery, and Angela Findlay, granddaughter of General Karl von Graffen of the German Wehrmacht, will join historian Dr Daniel Cowling to reflect on their respective grandfather\u2019s actions and positions in the war. <\/p>\n<p>Traces of Belsen at the Wiener Holocaust Library<\/p>\n<p>The Wiener Holocaust Library has opened a new exhibition, Traces of Belsen, which pays tribute to the liberation of the German concentration camp where almost half of the 120,000 prisoners died. <\/p>\n<p>Photos, artefacts, stories and more are on show, including a diary smuggled into the camp by the daughter of the Bloomsbury library&#8217;s founder, Dr Alfred Wiener, which tells the horrifying truths of life for Jewish prisoners there.<\/p>\n<p>VE Day in the Gardens at Stephens House and Gardens, Finchley<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/VE-Day.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"381\" alt=\"VE Day\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Stephens House<\/p>\n<p>At Stephens House and Gardens in Finchley will be war film screenings, maypole dancing, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/celebrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrations<\/a>, as well as a collection of wartime objects collated by the Finchley Society. <\/p>\n<p>The idea is to recreate the day in 1945 and there will also be an opportunity to take a photo, capturing the same scene 80 years on.<\/p>\n<p>Choir performance at the Imperial War Museum<\/p>\n<p>Local choirs are to come together for an afternoon of songs from the 1940s up until the present day at the Imperial War Museum. <\/p>\n<p>Organised in collaboration with Sweet Track Productions, the day \u201cwill evoke the unique blend of relief, celebration, sadness and community felt across the country 80 years ago, as the Second World War in Europe came to an end\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Monday May 5 at the Imperial War Museum, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/visits\/iwm-london?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=aip_IWM-Grant_London-Destination_Consideration_UK_Brand_PPC_Text&amp;utm_content=grant_cpc&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADtphbyBYuNXlheVgaZktpNqYeX7W&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwn6LABhBSEiwAsNJrjgtr9bGgljyGYuT4hWpi-ZUKh3rl6k4TmMlKQ2yqR3xAveBAxztYKhoCDOYQAvD_BwE\">iwm.org.uk <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Party at the Royal Albert Hall<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1745456713_666_VE-Day.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"VE Day\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB\"\/><\/p>\n<p>AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Armed Forces charity, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Families Association (SSAFA), will salute \u201cOur Greatest Generation\u201d with music, dance and stories at the Royal Albert Hall. <\/p>\n<p>The evening will include a performance from the RAF Squadronaires, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, and personal accounts from those who were there 80 years ago. <\/p>\n<p>Experience on board HMS Wellington<\/p>\n<p>The warship HMS Wellington, moored on the Victoria Embankment, will begin celebrations with a flag raising ceremony on May 8, which all can witness from the riverbank. <\/p>\n<p>The vessel will then be open to the public, with tea, coffee and \u201cwartime\u201d biscuits served on the Quarterdeck (to be paid for) and a performance from the Glenn Miller Orchestra Band. All the money raised will go to the Wellington Trust which works to preserve the ship. <\/p>\n<p>Brushstrokes from the Front Lines exhibition at gallery@oxo<\/p>\n<p>The trailblazing British war artist Doris Zinkkeisen, once a British Red Cross and St John Ambulance Brigade volunteer, painted moving, elegant artworks of scenes she witnessed during the war, including hospital wards, night raids, rescue missions and the repatriation of prisoners of war. <\/p>\n<p>Zinkkeisen\u2019s paintings are to be displayed for the first time as part of a VE Day exhibition at gallery@oxo in May.
