Leigh represented the United States at the 2022 Venice Biennale, making her the first Black woman to secure the prestigious commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Leigh <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2025\/sep\/23\/simone-leigh-royal-academy-show-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Guardian that a theme of the forthcoming London show will be architecture and art made under fascist regimes. \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking about American history a lot in the development of these works because we\u2019re now living under full-on fascism here,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking about the kind of art that\u2019s made under fascism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">She adds: \u201cAll institutions are under attack. I know of artists who have signed contracts to do commissions and these commissions have been either stalled or cancelled for anti-DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] reasons. So it\u2019s really happening\u2026 I\u2019m more than concerned, it\u2019s getting a little scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In January, the US president Donald Trump\u00a0issued an executive order titled \u201cEnding radical and wasteful government DEI programs and preferencing\u201d, <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/03\/28\/scrapping-dei-initiatives-could-damage-us-museums-visitor-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in effect<\/a> terminating DEI initiatives across federal institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Chicago-born Leigh is known for sculpture, video, performance and social projects that focus on race, history and gender, but above all on the Black female experience. Her art, executed in materials like ceramics, raffia and bronze, is inspired by ancient African and African-American objects as well as ethnography, the history of architecture, feminist criticism and chronicles of political resistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In 2018, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum awarded Leigh the Hugo Boss Prize. She also featured in the 2019 Whitney Biennial and created the colossal piece\u00a0Brick House\u00a0(2018-19), a 16-ft-tall bust of a Black woman, for the High Line in Manhattan. Leigh won the Golden Lion at the 2022 Venice Biennale for Brick House which was included in the main exhibition Milk of Dreams.
