Part gothic, part modernist, it sits in a space that is unencumbered by the chaos of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/piccadilly-gardens\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Piccadilly Gardens<\/a> or the bustle of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/market-street\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Market Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Flanked by Chetham&#8217;s School of Music, Victoria Station and the Corn Exchange and with the Cathedral in clear view, it is steeped in history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels developed a habit of studying together at a table in the Reading Room at Chetham\u2019s Library in 1845.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_5707.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Chetham&#8217;s Library<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But gaze from the window of that library today and you can see one of the city\u2019s most recognisable landmarks &#8211; Ian Simpson\u2019s Urbis building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Get news, views and analysis of the biggest stories with the daily Mancunian Way newsletter &#8211; sign up <\/strong><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/data.reachplc.com\/252194072307958?subsignupsource=SignUpMancWayMEN_edit\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">here<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A grand feat of architecture, it was developed as a museum and exhibition centre intended to showcase inner-city life &#8211; a symbol of regeneration after the IRA bombing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But it became something of a white elephant when it failed to attract visitors and ended up dropping its admission fee.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_5688.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Urbis from Cathedral Gardens<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">It was eventually transformed into the National Football Museum &#8211; much to the annoyance of the people of Preston, who used to house the attraction in their city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">History aside, Urbis and the surrounding area has always been a pretty delightful place to meet a friend, or enjoy a meal deal sandwich on your lunch break. And of course at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Christmas<\/a>, it\u2019s a winter wonderland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But during a recent rainy day visit I was alarmed by the absence of something I\u2019d always considered a fixture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Urbis was once THE meeting place for Manchester\u2019s alternative scenesters. But when I sauntered down last week, there wasn\u2019t a black varnished nail in sight.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_5697.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The cathedral in view<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">It was the preserve of the city\u2019s moshers, emos, goths and skaters for the longest time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Visit here on a sunny day in 2002 and you were only ever a wallet chain and a pair of baggies away from really feeling your feelings. Perhaps it was the music, perhaps it was the fug of smoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A cursory glance <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/manchester\/comments\/71c08g\/emos_outside_urbis_back_in_the_day\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">on Reddit<\/a> and it appears many have similar memories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cI used to hang around there with my friend to meet boys,\u201d one person wrote in a thread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cWe&#8217;d also go to Affleck&#8217;s Palace to spend our pocket money on stripey hair clips and sweat bands haha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cThere is still a handful of young kids and skaters there, they hang out around the door way of Chetham&#8217;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758989476_704_0_Spring-sunshine-Manchester.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Skater Scott Kane in Cathedral Gardens in 2014(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Those caught up in the reminiscence mention spending the day there after the Jilly\u2019s Rockworld allnighter, meeting friends they have kept ever since and the perpetual presence of soapy bubbles in the water feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">But all this was missing on my recent visit. In fact, it is pretty dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">As the gothic architecture of Chetham\u2019s casts a shadow over the manicured grass, a lone balloon bounces along the stream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A man plays with two yappy little dogs, a dad shadows his toddler as he weaves along the grassy knolls and a group of friends laugh as they lie on the grass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_5698.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The area known as Cathedral Gardens aka Urbis<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Three teenagers play on a roundabout that they are very clearly too big for and cackle. A little boy screams with joy as his dad whizzes him around on the roundabout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">A group of Chet\u2019s students glide past like a waddle of ducks. Among the chatter a teacher\u2019s voice rings out: \u201cHave you got anything from this afternoon\u2019s trip?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">\u201cNo,\u201d says a girl, with certainty. \u201cI\u2019ve got Maths and Practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_IMG_5706.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Urbis building behind a water feature<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">There is a Hermione Granger-like tone to her voice. She\u2019s busy and she hasn\u2019t got time for any nonsense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">When they\u2019re gone, all I can hear is the leaves of the silver birch dancing in the wind, tram wheels rolling heavily over tracks and water gurgling beneath the metal grills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"men\">Quite by accident, I have found one of the most peaceful spots in the city.
