England have won the Women’s Rugby World Cup after defeating Canada 33-13 at Allianz Stadium Twickenham<\/a>. John Mitchell’s team, currently ranked number one globally, have now secured an impressive 33 consecutive victories.<\/p>\n

Despite carrying the weight of a disappointing World Cup finals record, with only one win in six consecutive appearances, England turned the tables this time. Canada drew first blood when Asia Hogan-Rochester scored just five minutes into the game.<\/p>\n

However, England bounced back with tries from Ellie Kildunne, Amy Cokayne and Alex Matthews, leading 21-8 at half-time. Abby Ward further cemented England’s dominance with a try 10 minutes into the second half.<\/p>\n

Canada showed resilience, narrowing the gap with another try from Hogan-Rochester.<\/p>\n

But it was England who ultimately triumphed, securing their first championship since 2014 as Alex Matthews crossed the line with 10 minutes remaining, sealing a 33-13 victory.<\/p>\n

And post-match, Canada’s Sophie de Goede was awarded player of the year following a superb tournament that saw only two players score more points than her 61 despite being a second-row.<\/p>\n

De Goede, ever present for her country, was classily applauded by England’s players while Canada’s players celebrated with her despite dealing with their own emotions after the final loss.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the final, England’s defence coach Sarah Hunter told BBC<\/a> One: “It means everything.<\/p>\n

“It’s a moment in time for the women’s game. For our girls to experience being world<\/a> champions in front of an amazing ground is incredible.<\/p>\n

“I’m just immensely proud of them. Everyone spoke about Canada’s threat but we just stuck to our process.<\/p>\n

“We denied them access at all points. I will forever be proud of them for what they’ve done today.”<\/p>\n
