{"id":45627,"date":"2025-04-24T04:05:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T04:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/45627\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T04:05:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T04:05:12","slug":"trans-protest-to-be-held-in-birmingham-following-rallies-in-london-and-edinburgh-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/45627\/","title":{"rendered":"Trans protest to be held in Birmingham following rallies in London and Edinburgh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trans rights protesters will descend upon Birmingham on Saturday for a demonstration in response to a Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after similar rallies were held in London and Edinburgh at the weekend, following the justices\u2019 ruling on April 16 that the terms \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201csex\u201d in the Equality Act 2010 \u201crefer to a biological woman and biological sex\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It means that trans women cannot use single-sex female toilets, changing rooms or compete in women\u2019s sports, according to the head of Britain\u2019s equalities watchdog.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers of the Birmingham rally said the demonstration will aim to show solidarity with those affected by the ruling, which they say has far-reaching implications for transgender people accessing single-sex services and spaces.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"2010 Equality Act legal ruling rally\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2e9019291dc9c05ef81128bc451f33f4.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>People from trans rights groups and community organisations take part in a rally organised by Resisting Transphobia outside Queen Elizabeth House, the UK Government building in Edinburgh (Lesley Martin\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>Brendan McPhillips, one of the organisers of the event, said the city would be presenting a \u201cunited front against hatred and discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThis protest is set against the historic backdrop of the gay panic, the lives lost to the AIDS crisis, and reminiscent of the fights from yesteryear that only yester-queers will fully understand.
