{"id":458383,"date":"2025-09-28T17:28:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T17:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/458383\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T17:28:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T17:28:18","slug":"support-for-irish-unification-growing-in-northern-ireland-poll-finds-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/458383\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for Irish unification growing in Northern Ireland, poll finds \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Support for Irish unity has grown significantly in the past three years in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\">Northern Ireland<\/a>, though a clear majority remains in favour of remaining part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/uk\/\">United Kingdom<\/a>, according to the latest opinion poll for The Irish Times and the ARINS Project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the poll suggests that a Border poll would be soundly defeated in the North and  passed comfortably in the South, the results over the past three years of annual polls suggest a rise  in support for Irish unity in the North.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition, there are signs that \u201closers\u2019 consent\u201d among unionists \u2013 the willingness to accept the result of a referendum they would lose \u2013 is increasing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A growing number of unionists also support the holding of a Border poll, perhaps because they could expect to win a referendum if held now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked how they would vote in a referendum on Irish unity, almost two-thirds of voters in the Republic say they would support unification. This number has remained largely consistent over the three years of the survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Northern Ireland, just under half of all respondents (48 per cent) say they would vote against unity, while 34 per cent say they would vote in favour. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/01\/27\/north-and-south-what-we-know-now-and-what-we-want-to-investigate-in-future\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North and South: what we know now, and what we want to investigate in futureOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The pro-unity number has increased from 27 per cent in the first year of the survey in 2022, and is mainly accounted for by a sharp rise in the proportion of Northern Catholics saying they would vote for a united Ireland \u2013 up from 55 per cent in 2022 to 63 per cent in 2024. However, almost a fifth \u2013 18 per cent \u2013 of Northern Catholics say they would vote against unity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Northern Protestants remain strongly opposed to Irish unity, with 82 per cent saying they would vote against it, and just seven per cent in favour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, Northern Protestants have grown more open to the idea that a referendum should be held \u2013 with 44 per cent in favour, and 37 per cent opposed.
