It is regularly hailed as the best Italian restaurant in the Scottish capital&#8230; but this isn&#8217;t one of those posh joints where you need a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/banks\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"bankLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">bank<\/a> loan to pay for a meal<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Chef Rosario Sartore grew up in a large family in a poor neighbourhood in Naples and after moving to Scotland, he has spent his working life trying to recreate the authentic, family-friendly Neapolitan dining experience he grew up with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Now 51, he was recently awarded one of Italy&#8217;s highest honours \u2013 the Order of Merit for Labour \u2013 and given the title Cavaliere, the equivalent of a knighthood in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Locanda-de-Gusti.jpg\" alt=\"The restaurant on Dalry Road\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Locanda de Gusti, a highly rated Italian restaurant, is located near Haymarket<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Speaking in a video on his website, called &#8216;Why I Love Food&#8217;, he said: &#8220;My love of food started back home&#8230; coming from a big family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">&#8220;We lived for about 22 years in this huge apartment, so you can just imagine the amount of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/food\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"foodLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">food<\/a> that was prepared and consumed on a daily basis, with all these kids and adults.&#8221;, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk\/lifestyle\/food\/edinburgh-italian-restaurant-family-ties-35963761\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Scottish Daily Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Chef-Rosario-Sartore.jpg\" alt=\"Chef Rosario Sartore\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Chef Rosario Sartore, who grew up in Naples, has recreated his family-friendly Neapolitan dining in Scotland and was recently awarded Italy\u2019s Order of Merit for Labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Describing his neighbourhood in Naples, he went on: &#8220;You go downstairs and you start to smell the vegetables, and then you go the fishmonger and then you go the butcher, it&#8217;s all there, the colours and the smells, that&#8217;s how it starts, the love of food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">&#8220;Eighty per cent of what I cook in my restaurant is Scottish. Meat, root vegetables, an abundance of fish.
