rel=\"noopener\">Italian<\/a> jaunt, but rather Wroc\u0142aw, a city in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/14\/poland-became-underdog-destination-choice-2024-summer-holidays-20270954\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/14\/poland-became-underdog-destination-choice-2024-summer-holidays-20270954\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poland<\/a> dubbed \u2018the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/07\/venices-food-tasteless-know-a-european-city-right-23028760\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venice<\/a> of Eastern <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/09\/27\/tourists-go-home-please-come-back-truth-mallorcas-tourism-crisis-24186462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It earned its title thanks to the\u00a012 <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/28\/thought-british-holidays-boring-this-underrated-island-changed-mind-23119173\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/28\/thought-british-holidays-boring-this-underrated-island-changed-mind-23119173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">islands<\/a> that make up Wroc\u0142aw, each connected by <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/10\/worlds-new-highest-bridge-costing-216-000-000-open-china-22883226\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/10\/worlds-new-highest-bridge-costing-216-000-000-open-china-22883226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bridges<\/a> (there are 130 in total) and canals reminiscent of the famous sinking city in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/08\/went-overlooked-european-city-11-hours-never-make-this-mistake-22138904\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chelsea<\/a> fan. <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/27\/happens-chelsea-win-europa-conference-league-final-happens-chelsea-win-europa-conference-league-final-happens-chelsea-win-europa-conference-league-final-23257897\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supporters will be flocking to Poland<\/a> ahead of the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/europa-conference-league\/\" data-type=\"link\" \u2018Venice of Eastern Europe\u2019 (Picture: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty easy to get to Wroc\u0142aw from the UK, with direct flights to <a href=\"https:\/\/airport.wroclaw.pl\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Port Lotniczy<\/a>, the city\u2019s major airport, which is just 12km from the centre.<\/p>\n<p>The cheapest flights currently available on Skyscanner can be found in October, flying with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ryanair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryanair<\/a> from Stansted for just \u00a335 return.<\/p>\n<p>However, the low-cost carrier also has flights available from various UK airports, including <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/manchester\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester<\/a>, East Midlands and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/stansted-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London Stansted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What to do in Wroc\u0142aw<\/p>\n<p>The Market Square is at the heart of Wroc\u0142aw\u2019s Old Town, and a good place to start for any tourist. The city is easily <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/10\/uks-walkable-city-a-vibrant-coastal-spot-just-hour-london-23052405\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walkable<\/a>, so be sure to wander around the streets, marvelling at the architecture that dates back to the 12th century.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-1351459547.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23269088\" alt=\"Wroclaw Market\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tTake a trip to Hala Targowa (Picture: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>From the old to the new(ish), the modernist Centennial Hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, built in 1911. Take a tour, or check out it\u2019s schedule of concerts, plays and performances.<\/p>\n<p>Wroc\u0142aw is also a market-lovers paradise. There\u2019s the Hala \u015awiebodzki, a street-food market located in an old train station, as well as the Hala Targowa, which was built in 1908, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, sweets, and plenty of flowers. Cathedral Island is perhaps the most famous \u2013 dating back to the 10th century \u2013 and also the most beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>For something a bit different, head to Nadodrze, an artsy neighbourhood famed for its street art. Roosevelt Street, with its \u2018colourful courtyards\u2019 is worth checking out.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tWhere to eat and drink in Wroc\u0142aw\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Need some refreshments after all that sight-seeing? Patrycja shares her favourite spots in Wroc\u0142aw:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<strong>BABA<\/strong>. A fine dining restaurant serving Polish cuisine, headed up by a female chef. Be sure to order one of their creative cocktails too.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Piekarnia Plon<\/strong>. A bakery that\u2019s not to be missed. From croissants to sourdough breads, everything is delicious.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Charlotte.<\/strong> This popular bistro chain is a must when visiting Poland. Go for one of their famed breakfasts, with homemade breads, jams and spreads.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Piwnica \u015awidnicka<\/strong>. There are more than 800 cute gnomes scattered around the city, a tradition which began back in 2001, when a statue of a gnome, the symbol of Poland\u2019s anti-communist movement, was placed on one of the city\u2019s main streets.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, they\u2019ve been popping up all over the place, and a festival in their honour is held every September.
