{"id":46047,"date":"2025-04-24T07:44:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T07:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/46047\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T07:44:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T07:44:10","slug":"rafael-nadal-suggests-what-carlos-alcaraz-will-have-to-do-if-he-ever-wants-to-match-his-grand-slam-title-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/46047\/","title":{"rendered":"Rafael Nadal suggests what Carlos Alcaraz will have to do if he ever wants to match his Grand Slam title record"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Rafael Nadal is one of just three male players to have won 20 or more Grand Slam singles titles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spanish legend won his first Grand Slam title in 2005 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/french-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Open<\/a>, when Nadal beat Mariano Puerta in the final, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nadal<\/a> won his 22nd and final Major title 17 years later, taking down Norway\u2019s Casper Ruud in straight sets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-1401703942-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Tim Clayton\/Corbis via Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Tim Clayton\/Corbis via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>His 22nd Slam victory saw him briefly become the most successful player in the history of men\u2019s tennis before being surpassed by his rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novak Djokovic<\/a>, who won his 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th Majors shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>The task of winning 20 or more Grand Slam titles is certainly a formidable one, as Nadal now reveals what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP Tour\u2019s<\/a> number-three ranked player must do if he is to match his success at the Major tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Rafael Nadal says Carlos Alcaraz needs \u2018many years\u2019 to match his Grand Slam count<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Alcaraz\u2019s<\/a> new Netflix documentary, Nadal gave his verdict on whether the youngster could one day win as many Grand Slams as him.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2210917255-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Jose Breton\/Pics Action\/NurPhoto via Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Jose Breton\/Pics Action\/NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo match those figures you need many years, no matter how good you are, you can\u2019t do it in five years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to be able to live with that drive or goal and pursue it until you actually achieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz\u2019s coach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/juan-carlos-ferrero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Carlos Ferrero<\/a>, then explained just how many titles the 21-year-old will need to pick up each year if he is to match Nadal\u2019s tally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2194510901-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by ADRIAN DENNIS\/AFP via Getty Images\" \/>Photo by ADRIAN DENNIS\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many Grand Slams do you need to win every year to really match Rafa\u2019s figures?\u201d said Ferrero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say about two. If you miss one year, then three the following year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nadal won 1.2 Major titles per season between 2005 and 2022 (His Grand Slam winning career).<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, Alcaraz has also averaged 1.2 Major titles per season between 2022 and 2025 (His Grand Slam winning career).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2156800557-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>While Alcaraz may currently be on pace to match Nadal\u2019s tally of 22 Grand Slam titles, one American tennis legend still thinks it\u2019ll be a \u2018tall order\u2019 for him to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarlos [Alcaraz] coming from Spain and even trying to get close to what Rafa [Nadal] has done, that\u2019s a very, very tall order,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/john-mcenroe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John McEnroe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz and Nadal\u2019s fellow Spaniard went one step further, suggesting that if the youngster were to win 20 Grand Slams, he \u2018wouldn\u2019t have a life\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that to match Rafa\u2019s figures, you have to be a slave,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/garbine-muguruza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garbine Muguruza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2211235776-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Carlos Alvarez\/Getty Images for Laureus\" \/>Photo by Carlos Alvarez\/Getty Images for Laureus<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to reach that point without feeling like a slave to it.
