The Cairngorms is located within the Highlands, including parts of Aberdeenshire. In its national park, autumn and winter months come to life.<\/strong> It certainly does transform it from green rolling highlands perfect for hikes to bright white slopes for skiing by wintertime. <\/p>\n

Outdoor sports are not the only activities here. Nestled within the heart of the Cairngorms are the h<\/strong>ighland villages of Braemar and Ballater,<\/strong> which are in driving distance from the nearby city of Aberdeen. They give the ideal escape for those seeking to step into the Highlands. <\/p>\n

Cosying up in autumn<\/p>\n

Braemar has the luxury hotel Fife Arms Hotel but you do not need to fork out the cash to enjoy it, you can have a wee drink there in the lounge. There are also other accommodation options<\/strong> nearby like lodges and Cranford Guesthouse. <\/p>\n

If you have a dog or if being closer to nature is more your think, you can try out the Braemar Glamping Pods.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps the most popular destination in the area is Balmoral Castle where Queen Elizabeth herself used to enjoy breaks away<\/strong> from the pressures of demands in England, revelling in Scotland\u2019s unrivalled wilderness and hunting grounds.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

There, you can wander the golden shades of the grounds. You might even spot some wild animals in autumnal reds <\/strong>– from the red deer, foxes or red squirrels out on your walk. <\/p>\n

Winter wonders<\/p>\n

Balmoral Castle is closed in the winter months, but you can still walk around the castle and take in its stunning winter wonderland scenery, <\/strong>accessing the gardens of the castle too. The Mews Cafe and the gift shop should both be open though.<\/p>\n

If you are in Braemar, the Fife Arms is worth a tipple or soft drink to at least see the artistic Christmas decorations<\/strong> it is renowned for putting on display each year.<\/p>\n

When snow arrives in the Cairngorms, many people flock to the Glenshee ski centre.<\/strong> If you decide to visit, it is advised to book up quick, because when the snow falls, many people flock there for their winter sports. <\/p>\n

Even if you decide you don’t want to hit the slopes, you can enjoy a hot chocolate in the ski centre’s cafe<\/strong>. To warm up even more after being in the frost and snow in winter, you can enjoy Stavaig Sauna which provides panoramic views of Lochnagar.<\/p>\n

The highland town of Ballater also has a winter festival<\/a> to get into the festive spirit.<\/strong> This yearly event unites the community with the festive season for fun and merriment through family fun, a craft fair, a choir and even a very special visit from the Cairngorm Reindeer! <\/p>\n

Temperatures to expect<\/p>\n

Braemar has achieved some record breaking winter temperatures, <\/strong>from a low of -27.2\u00b0C back in 1995 which was the lowest ever recorded in the UK<\/strong>. While it does get cold there in winter, it is rarely that cold! Still, it is always nice to cosy up next to a fire in a local lodge<\/strong> when temperatures outside start to dip.<\/p>\n

Though temperatures are already dipping for the current autumn season, so it is already feeling a bit like winter some days. According to YourWeather\u2019s model forecasts<\/a>, this autumn week has seen a dips of 2\u00b0C at night<\/strong> but the low temperatures usually hover around 6\u00b0C this time of year.<\/p>\n

T<\/strong>emperatures in Braemar and even the Cairngorms be quite variable<\/strong>. Seeing how it can get so cold in this region, it is not surprising that this is often one of the first parts of Scotland to see snow<\/strong>, thus ushering in skiers to enjoy the slopes of Glenshee at first snowfall. <\/p>\n
