Andy Burnham<\/a> cast himself as an anti-warrior Brexit<\/a> as he pushed for a new direction for a Labour party dismayed at the surge in support for Reform UK.<\/p>\n

The Mayor of Greater Manchester declared his support for reversing the result of the 2016 referendum at a Labour party conference in Liverpool which has been overshadowed<\/a> by talk of his leadership ambitions.<\/p>\n

He told a fringe meeting: \u201cI\u2019m going to be honest. I\u2019m going to say it \u2013 I want to rejoin.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope in my lifetime I see this country rejoining<\/a> the European Union<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Burnham\u2019s comments are likely to frustrate Sir Keir Starmer<\/a>, who sought to assure Express readers during the run-up to the last election that Brexit<\/a> was safe in his hands.<\/p>\n

The Mayor argued it is time for Labour to \u201cstart calling out the disaster that Brexit<\/a> has been\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, he admitted: \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any prospect of rejoining anytime soon but I do still think you call out what\u2019s put the country in this position.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a further move which is likely to make the Prime Minister see red, Mr Burnham made it clear he did not support the introduction of Digital ID cards. When asked if he backed the policy, he said: \u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He acknowledged an impression \u201cthat I am just completely out for myself, disloyal\u201d. But he said he had worked during the summer and earlier this month to ensure the Hillsborough law was strengthened so he could recommend it to the families of those who died in the football disaster.<\/p>\n

Mr Burnham did not hide his frustration at attacks on him within the Labour movement.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt sticks in my throat somewhat for people who have just arrived on the scene to be throwing some of the comments at me that they have done. I did everything I possibly could to make this conference a success, and I would suggest more than other people did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mayor claimed Labour activists needed a strong message to take to the doorstep ahead May\u2019s Scottish and Welsh parliament and local government elections<\/p>\n

Reform UK has high ambitions that Labour will lose hold of the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd \u2013 and Mr Burnham argued he should not stay quiet at this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cBritain could take a very big stride towards that darker, more divided future in a few months time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Burnham also gave his support to Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan as he condemned racism.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI feel for him. He\u2019s a great friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mayor said the \u201ceveryday racism\u201d on display in Britain is \u201creally, really terrifying\u201d, adding there is \u201covert Islamophobia, antisemitism, racism swirling around\u201d.<\/p>\n

Playing down his chances of coming to Westminster, he said \u201csomething magical\u201d is happening in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n
