John Waters fans won\u2019t have to read the new screenplay books that he has coming out next month. He reads them himself, and voices every character, in an audio book collection that is being released in tandem with the print editions.<\/p>\n
Waters and Macmillian Audio, a division of Macmillan Publishers, announced on Monday that the writer and filmmaker has narrated the screenplays of five of his movies and the screenplay for a sixth movie that was never filmed. All six have been compiled in \u201cThe John Waters Screenplay Collection,\u201d which Macmillan will release on Oct. 21. The price is $26.99.<\/p>\n
The six films are: \u201cMultiple Maniacs\u201d (1970); \u201cPink Flamingos\u201d (1972); \u201cFemale Trouble\u201d (1974); \u201cDesperate Living\u201d (1977); \u201cHairspray\u201d (1988) and \u201cFlamingos Forever,\u201d a never-filmed sequel to Pink Flamingos, written in 1983. Screenplay books<\/a> for \u201cPink Flamingos,\u201d \u201cDesperate Living\u201d and \u201cFlamingos Forever\u201d came out in May. Screenplay books for \u201cMultiple Maniacs,\u201d \u201cFemale Trouble\u201d and \u201cHairspray\u201d will be released on Oct. 16.<\/p>\n \u201cA collection of John Waters essential screenplays, adapted for audio,\u201d Macmillan says on its website. \u201cListen as Waters himself narrates each role in the most delightfully deranged and iconic classics of American filth, camp and trash!\u2026Waters voices every single character, jumping back and forth between all the demented roles.\u201d<\/p>\n Among the characters Waters voices: Babs Johnson from \u201cPink Flamingos,\u201d fighting to retain her title as the \u201cFilthiest Person Alive\u201d; Tracy Turnblad from \u201cHairspray,\u201d vying to be a featured performer on The Corny Collins Show, and Dawn Davenport from \u201cFemale Trouble,\u201d pushing the Christmas tree over on her mother when she doesn\u2019t get Cha Cha heels, black ones.<\/p>\n \u201cFinally, I get the opportunity no other film director would want: to go over the top of \u2018line readings,\u2019 beyond multiple-motion-picture-disorder into a new dimension of celluloid insanity, and perform every single role in my movies out loud for your twisted enjoyment\u201d Waters said in a statement on Macmillan\u2019s website.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s right, from Divine right on down to the filthiest day player, I am now, for the first time, the entire cast of Multiple Maniacs! Pink Flamingos! Female Trouble! Desperate Living! Hairspray! Flamingos Forever!\u201d Waters continued. \u2018\u201dAural anarchy or cinematic schizophrenia? You be the judge. Go ahead, play it. You won\u2019t believe your ears.\u201d<\/p>\n Waters, 79, has narrated audio books before. His readings of \u201cCarsick\u201d (2014) and \u201cMr. Know-It-All\u201d (2019) were nominated for Grammy awards. This is the first time he has narrated any of his screenplays. People Magazine<\/a> had the first article about the collection.<\/p>\n \u201cThe John Waters Screenplay Collection\u201d is available for pre-order on Spotify. To mark the release of the latest screenplays and the audio book collection, Waters will appear at the 92nd Street Y cultural center, 1395 Lexington Avenue in New York City, on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m., for a \u201creading and conversation\u201d<\/a> with Michael Schulman of The New Yorker.
