The question for every filmmaker is always \u201cwhat\u2019s next?\u201d, even when their latest movie hasn\u2019t even come out. In the case of Oscar-winning visionary Guillermo del Toro<\/strong>, his latest passion project Frankenstein<\/strong><\/a> will release in select theaters on October 17 before streaming on Netflix on November 7. So what\u2019s next for del Toro, in a post-Frankenstein world?<\/p>\n

Speaking with Empire<\/a>, the acclaimed filmmaker notes that his long-awaited Frankenstein adaptation closes a certain \u201ccycle\u201d of his career. And he may surprise us with what comes next.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis movie closes the cycle,\u201d del Toro explains to Empire. \u201cIf you look at the lineage, from Cronos to The Devil\u2019s Backbone, to Pan\u2019s Labyrinth to Crimson Peak to this, this is an evolution of a certain type of aesthetic, and a certain type of rhythm, and a certain type of empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I need a change,\u201d del Toro admits.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He adds, however, \u201cYou never know. The day after tomorrow, I may want to do Jekyll & Hyde, or whatever. But right now, my desire is to try and do something very different<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fitting that Frankenstein might end up closing a particular chapter within Guillermo del Toro\u2019s filmography, as the film has been a passion project for del Toro for much of his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life. I first read\u00a0Mary Shelley\u2018s\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0as a kid and saw\u00a0Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system,\u201d the Academy Award-winning filmmaker told the audience at Netflix\u2019s recent Tudum event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are strands of\u00a0Frankenstein\u00a0throughout my films \u2014\u00a0Cronos, Blade, Hellboy, big time on\u00a0Pinocchio, and a long, long et cetera. Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stores again and again,\u201d del Toro continued. \u201cI wanted to make this film before even I had a camera, and I\u2019ve been actively pursuing it now for over 25 years It has grown so close to me that now it\u2019s biography.\u201d<\/p>\n
