The space will be a large central plaza with regular street food markets, all on top of a huge work of art telling the city\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">The work has <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/work-begins-huge-new-artwork-10487701\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"taken around three weeks to completeLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">taken around three weeks to complete<\/a> &#8211; with delays from rainy days &#8211; and the artist who designed it told Bristol Live he wanted it \u2018to bring the city together\u2019. The artwork is called \u2018Our Common Ground\u2019, and has been created in the long space between the Cascade Steps and the statue of Neptune in The Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">It has been created by Oisin Davis-Lyons &#8211; better known as artist Oshii &#8211; and was commissioned as part of the transformation of the Centre Promenade, after the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristols-fountains-gone-eye-catching-10336188\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"dried-up fountains were finally dug up Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">dried-up fountains were finally dug up <\/a>and tarmacked over to create a bigger area for street food stalls, public events and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">The space was handed over to the Bristol Legacy Foundation to come up with a creative art installation and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristols-fountains-gone-eye-catching-10336188\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Bristol Live first revealed the plan for the artwork back in JulyLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol Live first revealed the plan for the artwork back in July<\/a>. It covers a whopping 704 square metres, with a huge heart at its centre inscribed with the word \u2018Bristol\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Oshii, a multi-disciplinary artist from Bristol, said: \u201cIt\u2019s been such an honour to work on this project. It\u2019s been overwhelming to see it take shape from my computer screen. The heart is about unity, but it travels from the history of Bristol, and there\u2019s ideas of resistance, it celebrates the African diaspora community, and looks at Bristol\u2019s history and it moves into what makes Bristol so special today, with the music scene and all the communities that make Bristol so special.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cThe heart is really just a sign of what the city means to us. And at the top there\u2019s the future of the city, so the hand prints were taken in an engagement session at the Wellspring Settlement centre in Barton Hill \u201cThis is everyone\u2019s work and this space is for everyone, and they are really the future of the city. Its founder Steve Hayles said it took a while. \u201cIt took about three weeks, given the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/weather\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">weather<\/a>. It was meant to be a little bit quicker than that. There will be a weekly clean-down of it, obviously there\u2019s going to be traders and things on here. It\u2019s a space to be used, but it will be maintained over the years to come,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Bristol Legacy Foundation is a charity set up in 2019 to address the systemic marginalisation of African Heritage Communities in cultural, creative and public spaces, and this is the biggest, most prominent project they\u2019ve been involved in to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cIts bold colours and layered imagery invite people to reflect on journeys, memory and identity, while imagining a shared future built on care and respect,\u201d said a spokesperson for the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">\u201cCreated for the heart of Bristol, the artwork is anchored by a heart inscribed with the word \u2018Bristol\u2019, symbolising that it belongs to everyone in the city. These sessions helped ensure that the final design reflects the diverse voices, values, and aspirations of Bristol\u2019s communities,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"bristolpost\">Installation of the artwork will continue throughout the month.
