Last year the council put forward plans for an entirely new town to be created across north Liverpool towards <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a>, with a vision to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/new-town-called-liverpool-north-30629882\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">transform numerous brownfield sites and build thousands of homes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The proposed new development \u2013 to be known as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/major-plans-new-liverpool-north-32568695\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool North<\/a> &#8211; would span 5km from just north of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/liverpool-city-centre\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Liverpool city centreLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool city centre<\/a>, across Everton, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/anfield\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"AnfieldLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Anfield<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/kirkdale\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"KirkdaleLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Kirkdale<\/a> and into Bootle. The proposal would lead to the development of a number of brownfield sites and encompass key locations along the route including Everton FC\u2019s new \u00a3500m stadium at Bramley Moore Dock and the \u00a320m Bootle New Strand development project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Liverpool City Council put forward a submission for what is known as New Town Status from the government. But yesterday (Sunday), the government announced that 12 bids for New Town Status had been shortlisted and the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/major-plans-new-liverpool-north-32568695\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool North plans did not make the cut<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Now the city&#8217;s opposition Liberal Democrat party have accused the Labour government of &#8220;abandoning&#8221; Liverpool, the city where they are currently holding their annual conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Lib Dems<\/a> claimed the failure to move forward with Liverpool North is &#8220;not just a setback&#8221; but a &#8220;slap in the face for Liverpool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Liverpool Lib Dem leader Cllr Carl Cashman said: \u201cThis is a disgrace. Labour leaders told us that Liverpool\u2019s best chance was having Labour in power from the town hall to Westminster. Well, we\u2019ve got that now &#8211; and still Liverpool is snubbed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cThe North New Town project was a once-in-a-generation chance to regenerate huge swathes of our city. Instead, Labour\u2019s Government has turned its back, proving once and for all that their promises to Liverpool are hollow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cThe gall of Labour to try and wrap itself in glory at their conference in Liverpool off the back of two major snubs to the city defies expectations. Either they don\u2019t understand the optics, or they just don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cLiverpool deserves better than broken promises and backroom excuses. The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberal Democrats<\/a> will fight to put this city back on the national agenda, because we will never accept Liverpool being treated as second-class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Cllr Cashman&#8217;s party have now demanded that the government &#8220;immediately reverses this reckless decision&#8221; and commits funding for the Liverpool North Town in full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">On Sunday, the Labour Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, admitted that Liverpool North not being selected for New Town Status was &#8220;incredibly frustrating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">He said: &#8220;This is one of the biggest regeneration opportunities in the country \u2014 and today\u2019s decision is a missed chance for government to back communities that have been overlooked for far too long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">However Mayor Rotheram and Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson have vowed to continue with the plans despite the knockback from government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Mayor Rotheram added: &#8220;Regeneration here hasn\u2019t waited for Westminster. From Everton\u2019s new stadium at Bramley Moore to the transformation of Bootle Strand, we\u2019ve already begun reshaping the future of Liverpool North \u2014 working with our local partners, without central government support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Cllr Robinson added: &#8220;We are absolutely committed to delivering transformational change for Liverpool North.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cNaturally we are disappointed that our bid has not been successful, but doing nothing was never an option for us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">&#8220;We know the revitalisation of communities across a huge area, from Bootle through Kirkdale, to Anfield and Everton, will give the whole region a massive economic boost, provide thousands of affordable homes and create new districts providing employment, leisure and educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cTherefore we are already be working with our partners to find ways of delivering the scheme regardless.
