The reason: Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax.<\/p>\n<p>Make Hard Workouts Easier<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">A study review in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1186\/s12970-017-0204-9?src=recsys\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1186\/s12970-017-0204-9?src=recsys\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Journal of the International Society of Sports and Nutrition\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of the International Society of Sports and Nutrition<\/a> suggests that beetroot juice supplements might boost power and improve performance during high-intensity exercise. Again, nitric oxide comes into play by helping your muscles maintain phosphocreatine, a building block that otherwise depletes during a hard workout. Beets also improve the release and use of cellular calcium to help you contract muscles faster.<\/p>\n<p>Improve Muscle Recovery<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">A study review published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9214898\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9214898\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Sports Health\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports Health<\/a> suggests that a few days of beetroot supplementation can speed recovery from post-workout muscle soreness. A beet-induced boost in nitric oxide might increase cerebral blood flow, temporarily boosting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a46664721\/aging-brain-presidency-biden-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a46664721\/aging-brain-presidency-biden-trump\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"brain power\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">brain power<\/a>, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">So the benefits of beets are promising, but don\u2019t get too excited yet: Beet supplement studies have small numbers of participants (just five to 80 in the studies cited above) and lack the rigor of drug trials, says Brandt. (A phase III drug trial would likely have 1,000+ participants.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">That means it\u2019s hard to generalize the results and conclude whether the benefits shown in these supplement studies would apply to all or most of the population, including you.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">And don\u2019t count on beetroot supplements to save your heart in the long run. There\u2019s no evidence that the acute benefits of beetroot powder, for your heart or elsewhere, add up over time.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">Without high-quality long-term studies, any claims implying long-term benefits can\u2019t be verified. And since the good-for-you compounds in beets can\u2019t be patented, \u201cthere is little economic incentive for the industry to carry out large well-controlled trials,\u201d says Brandt.<\/p>\n<p>Should You Take Beetroot Supplements?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"25.0\">YOUR BEST BET<\/strong> is eating more beets in their whole vegetable form, says Brandt. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">Whole beets contain beneficial fiber, which some supplements lack. Now if you hate the taste or can\u2019t bear the chore of peeling beets, the powder can be an easy substitute\u2013just make sure you consume other foods rich in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a29369644\/how-to-get-more-fiber\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a29369644\/how-to-get-more-fiber\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fiber\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, like whole grains, says Brandt.<\/p>\n<p>What Should You Look for in a Good Beetroot Supplement?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"28.0\">WHEN SHOPPING FOR <\/strong>beet powder, avoid capsules and opt for a loose powder or chewable option instead. The process of converting nitrate to nitric oxide begins in your mouth, thanks to an assist from bacteria on your tongue, says Brandt. Capsules bypass this process and land further down in your digestive tract. And skip antibacterial mouthwash before you take your beets\u2014it can interfere with nitrate\u2019s conversion to nitric oxide, she says.<\/p>\n<p>Who Should Not Take Beetroot Supplements?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"30.0\">AVOID BEETROOT SUPPLEMENTS<\/strong> if you already have hypotension and don\u2019t need your BP to go any lower. And steer clear of beetroot powder if you know you have a high risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a37414565\/kidney-stones-most-painful-feeling-institute-human-anatomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a37414565\/kidney-stones-most-painful-feeling-institute-human-anatomy\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"kidney stones\" data-node-id=\"30.2\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">kidney stones<\/a>, because beets contain a lot of stone-forming oxalate.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a30300153\/millennial-high-blood-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a30300153\/millennial-high-blood-pressure\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"high BP\" data-node-id=\"31.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">high BP<\/a> and already take medication for it, talk to your doctor before buying a beet supplement.
