The Israeli prime minister, <strong>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong>, has already backed the plan, but it remains unclear whether Hamas will agree \u2013 or when it might issue its reply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The proposal demands that <strong>Hamas<\/strong> effectively surrender and disarm in return for an <strong>end to fighting, humanitarian aid, and the promise of reconstruction in Gaza<\/strong>. The territory has been devastated by the war, with the death toll now at more than <strong>66,000<\/strong> Palestinians, according to <strong>Gaza\u2019s <\/strong><strong>health <\/strong><strong>ministry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Trump<\/strong> and <strong>Netanyahu<\/strong> announced the plan after talks at the White House on Monday, and support for it has been pouring in from the international community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A senior <strong>Hamas<\/strong> official told the <strong>Associated Press<\/strong> the group will \u201cbegin studying it today\u201d with other factions, after receiving the proposal from <strong>Egyptian<\/strong> and <strong>Qatari<\/strong> mediators. There was no indication of when <strong>Hamas<\/strong> might respond. Mahmoud Mardawi, a Hamas official, said the group had not even received the plan at the time of the announcement, the Reuters news agency reported. It was later briefed that <strong>Qatari and Egyptian mediators met with Hamas on Monday <\/strong>evening to provide the group with the peace plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Both <strong>Trump and Netanyahu made clear that they were not offering Hamas a choice<\/strong> in the matter.
