They visited the site, informed local authorities, and began coordinating restoration work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe High Commission of India in London is deeply saddened and strongly condemns the shameful act of vandalism of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London,\u201d the mission stated on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"text-primary\" style=\"font-variation-settings: &#039;slnt&#039; -6\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HCI_London\/status\/1972704334879269053\">X<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just vandalism, but a violent attack on the idea of non-violence, three days before the International Day of Non-Violence, and on the legacy of the Mahatma. We have taken this up strongly with local authorities for immediate action, and our team is already on site, coordinating with authorities to restore the statue to its original dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unveiled in 1968 with support from the India League, the statue depicts Gandhi in a meditative seated pose and has become a focal point for Gandhi Jayanti commemorations in the UK. <\/p>\n<p>Each 2 October, floral tributes and Gandhi\u2019s favorite bhajans honour the day, which also marks the United Nations-recognised International Day of Non-Violence.<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police and Camden Council confirmed they are investigating the incident. <\/p>\n<p>The statue\u2019s pedestal reads: \u201cMahatma Gandhi, 1869\u20131948,\u201d marking his historic connection to London, where he studied law.
