<\/p>\nGerman, French inflation rises in September<\/p>\n

FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept 30, 2025 (BSS\/AFP) – Inflation in Germany and\u00a0
\nFrance, the eurozone’s biggest economies, rose in September, data showed\u00a0
\nTuesday, fuelling expectations the European Central Bank (ECB) will not make\u00a0
\nfurther interest rate cuts in coming months.<\/p>\n
Annual inflation in Germany, Europe’s top economy, came in at 2.4 percent\u00a0
\naccording to preliminary data from federal statistics agency Destatis, up\u00a0
\nfrom 2.2 percent the previous month.<\/p>\n
The figure, slightly above analyst estimates, was driven by increasing costs\u00a0
\nfor services and goods.<\/p>\n
Under the “harmonised” metric favoured by the ECB, consumer prices also rose\u00a0
\nby 2.4 percent, up from 2.2 percent in August.<\/p>\n
French annual inflation accelerated to 1.2 percent in September, up from 0.9\u00a0
\npercent in August, also driven by rising services costs, according to the\u00a0
\nINSEE statistics agency.<\/p>\n
Under the harmonised rate, consumer prices rose 1.1 percent in September\u00a0
\ncompared to 0.8 percent in August, according to INSEE’s provisional estimate.<\/p>\n
In Italy, the euro area’s third-biggest economy, annual inflation remained\u00a0
\nstable in September at 1.6 percent, according to official data.<\/p>\n
Under the harmonised rate, consumer prices rose to 1.8 percent this month\u00a0
\nfrom 1.6 percent in August.<\/p>\n
Following a string of cuts to support the struggling eurozone economy, the\u00a0
\nECB has kept interest rates on hold for its past two meetings, with inflation\u00a0
\nhovering around its two-percent target.<\/p>\n
Stephanie Schoenwald, an economist with German public lender KfW, said the\u00a0
\nlatest eurozone data showed that “the ECB was right in its decision to end\u00a0
\nits monetary easing policy, especially as price pressure in the services\u00a0
\nsector is once again proving persistent”.<\/p>\n
The central bank for the 20 countries that use the euro holds its next rate-
\nsetting meeting on October 30.<\/p>\n
Most economists expect the ECB to hold rates steady until at least the end of\u00a0
\nthis year.<\/p>\n
