Inflation in Germany and\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nFrance, the eurozone&#8217;s biggest economies, rose in September, data showed\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nTuesday, fuelling expectations the European Central Bank (ECB) will not make\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nfurther interest rate cuts in coming months.<\/p>\n<p>Annual inflation in Germany, Europe&#8217;s top economy, came in at 2.4 percent\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\naccording to preliminary data from federal statistics agency Destatis, up\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nfrom 2.2 percent the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>The figure, slightly above analyst estimates, was driven by increasing costs\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nfor services and goods.<\/p>\n<p>Under the &#8220;harmonised&#8221; metric favoured by the ECB, consumer prices also rose\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nby 2.4 percent, up from 2.2 percent in August.<\/p>\n<p>French annual inflation accelerated to 1.2 percent in September, up from 0.9\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\npercent in August, also driven by rising services costs, according to the\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nINSEE statistics agency.<\/p>\n<p>Under the harmonised rate, consumer prices rose 1.1 percent in September\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\ncompared to 0.8 percent in August, according to INSEE&#8217;s provisional estimate.<\/p>\n<p>In Italy, the euro area&#8217;s third-biggest economy, annual inflation remained\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nstable in September at 1.6 percent, according to official data.<\/p>\n<p>Under the harmonised rate, consumer prices rose to 1.8 percent this month\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nfrom 1.6 percent in August.<\/p>\n<p>Following a string of cuts to support the struggling eurozone economy, the\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nECB has kept interest rates on hold for its past two meetings, with inflation\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nhovering around its two-percent target.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Schoenwald, an economist with German public lender KfW, said the\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nlatest eurozone data showed that &#8220;the ECB was right in its decision to end\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nits monetary easing policy, especially as price pressure in the services\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nsector is once again proving persistent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank for the 20 countries that use the euro holds its next rate-<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nsetting meeting on October 30.<\/p>\n<p>Most economists expect the ECB to hold rates steady until at least the end of\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nthis year.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"German, French inflation rises in September FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept 30, 2025 (BSS\/AFP) &#8211;
