{"id":463427,"date":"2025-09-30T15:45:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T15:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/463427\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T15:45:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T15:45:16","slug":"alumnae-event-features-book-on-meredith-legend-roxie-laybourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/463427\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumnae Event Features Book on Meredith Legend Roxie Laybourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Meredith Alumnae Association\u2019s most recent Author Chat featured the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Feather-Detective\/Chris-Sweeney\/9781668025840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Feather Detective<\/a>, which tells the story of Meredith alumna Roxie Collie Laybourne, a trailblazing woman who was the world\u2019s first forensic ornithologist. <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-206310 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/NewsInset-ChrisSweeny-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Author Chris Sweeney\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Laybourne, who graduated from Meredith in 1932, worked at the Smithsonian Institution and used her skills in identifying feathers to solve a remarkable number of mysteries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Chris Sweeney visited Meredith\u2019s campus on September 25 and was interviewed by Hilary Allen, \u201901, director of alumnae relations, about his book and why he calls Laybourne a role model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just find her to be the type of person that we should all look up to. This is the type of role model that we should have,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cShe helped others, she helped science, she helped us understand her world, and she did it with grace and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney, who first wrote about Laybourne in an article for Audubon magazine, covers her life and career in his book.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was so resilient, so determined, and so clever. She embarked on some very difficult scientific endeavors, and she thrived in some adverse social environments,\u201d Sweeney said. \u201cShe is the exact kind of role model we need more of in today\u2019s world, and I hope this book will introduce her legacy to a large audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 70 alumnae and community members registered for the author event. Also in attendance was Carla Dove, who worked with Laybourne at the Smithsonian and was mentored by her. Dove is also featured in The Feather Detective.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney took questions from the audience, and Dove answered a few questions about her experiences working with Laybourne at the Smithsonian.
