{"id":463897,"date":"2025-09-30T19:50:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T19:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/463897\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T19:50:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T19:50:18","slug":"eu-pledges-e2bn-for-ukraine-drones-and-demands-urgent-boost-to-eastern-defences-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/463897\/","title":{"rendered":"EU pledges \u20ac2bn for Ukraine drones and demands urgent boost to eastern defences \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eu\/\">European Union<\/a> (EU) has pledged to spend \u20ac2 billion on drones for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">Ukraine<\/a>, European Commission president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> has announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The bloc also committed to work with Kyiv and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nato\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nato\/\">Nato<\/a> to \u201cfast forward\u201d the development of a defensive \u201cdrone wall\u201d to shield eastern member states from aerial incursions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Senior EU and Nato officials discussed the threat of drones and other security issues ahead of large gatherings of European leaders on Wednesday and Thursday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\/\">Copenhagen<\/a>, where specialists from Ukraine and several Nato member states are helping Danish authorities strengthen their anti-drone defences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIf we continue to believe that Ukraine is our first line of defence, we need to step up our military assistance to Ukraine. Concretely, we have agreed with Ukraine that a total of \u20ac2 billion will be spent on drones. This allows Ukraine to scale up its drone production capacity and will allow the EU to benefit from this technology,\u201d von der Leyen said in Brussels on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cOn the flagship-project Eastern Flank Watch we need to act now,\u201d she added, referring to an EU initiative announced this month to bolster defences in eastern member states, which has as its centrepiece plans for a drone wall \u2013 inter-operative national systems to swiftly detect and destroy suspicious drones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEurope must deliver a strong and united response to Russia\u2019s drone incursions at our borders.
