A private hire taxi driver has had his licence revoked after he illegally picked up a fare outside Old Trafford<\/a> and charged \u00a335 for a four-mile journey.<\/p>\n

Rehan Mirza, 42, was waiting in his Mercedes at the black cab rank on Sir Matt Busby Way after Manchester United’<\/a>s Premier League<\/a> match against Leicester City<\/a> on November 10 last year.<\/p>\n

He picked up a United fan, and his seven-year-old son, and took them to Piccadilly train station.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mirza insisted the journey had cost \u00a335.<\/p>\n

The suspicious fan paid up but later complained to Trafford Council.<\/a><\/p>\n

Private hire drivers are only permitted and insured to pick up pre-booked passengers.<\/p>\n

Their licensing enforcement team carried out an investigation, and found Mirza had been had been illegally plying for fares at the rank and hence driving without insurance.<\/p>\n

His private hire licence was revoked, in his absence, at a meeting of Trafford Council’s licensing sub-committee.<\/p>\n

He was also prosecuted and pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates Court to charges of illegally plying for hire, permitting any other vehicle other than a Hackney Carriage to wait in a stand, and driving without insurance.<\/p>\n

He was sentenced on Friday, September 19, where Mirza of Chudleigh Road, Crumpsall, was fined \u00a3250, ordered to pay a surcharge of \u00a3100 and costs of \u00a3300.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said in a statement issued after the hearing: \u201cOnce again our Licensing Enforcement Team has demonstrated a continued dedication to hold drivers, who put the public at risk, accountable for their actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly Trafford<\/a> licensed Hackney vehicles can pick customers up without a pre-booked fare outside Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
