{"id":464059,"date":"2025-09-30T21:15:33","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T21:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/464059\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T21:15:33","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T21:15:33","slug":"former-aide-to-german-far-right-lawmaker-in-the-european-parliament-is-convicted-of-spying-for-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/464059\/","title":{"rendered":"Former aide to German far-right lawmaker in the European Parliament is convicted of spying for China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN (AP) \u2014 A man who worked for a prominent German far-right lawmaker in the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/european-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Parliament<\/a> was convicted Tuesday of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spying for China<\/a> for more than four years, according to German news agency dpa.<\/p>\n<p>Jian Guo, a German citizen, was accused of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-china-afd-spying-18b6c38a882028e258b1f890f72c5a6c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working for a Chinese intelligence service<\/a> and of repeatedly passing on information on negotiations and decisions in the EU Parliament between September 2019 and April 2024, when he was arrested. <\/p>\n<p>He was sentenced Tuesday to four years and nine months in prison, dpa reported. He denied wrongdoing during a court hearing last week.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s foreign ministry last year said reports in Europe about Chinese spying are all \u201chyping up with an aim to smear and suppress China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guo also snooped on Chinese dissidents in Germany and gathered information on prominent politicians with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-democracy-protests-afd-nazis-2dce0ea7ed40fccd3f0ec1c46edcfd42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the far-right<\/a> Alternative for Germany, or AfD.<\/p>\n<p>The federal prosecutor has named him as Jian G., in line with the country\u2019s privacy rules. His former boss, far-right lawmaker Maximilian Krah, previously identified him.<\/p>\n<p>Krah was a witness in Guo\u2019s trial and said he did not have any knowledge of his former aide\u2019s activities, dpa reported.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-lawmaker-krah-raids-afd-cff529ebf8635e09925d8a2fb0e0c2ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany\u2019s parliament lifted Krah\u2019s immunity<\/a> in connection with allegations that he also has had ties to China and was involved in corruption and spying scandals. Lifting his immunity as a lawmaker was a necessary step for authorities to prosecute him.
